So when my friend visited from out of town, she insisted on going to Magnolia Bakery. I've had poor experiences with tourist friends insisting on things before, and ths turned out to be no different. The cupcakes felt like they could've come out of a box baked at home (maybe with fancier names), the prices were sadly distinctly New Yorkish, and the tourist, oh SO MANY TOURISTS. So I would give it a one star myself. My friend, though, seemed to appreciate every ""intricacy"" about the experience, and would've given it a five. Thus, I'm averaging us out, and there's your 3. But you've been warned.
