stay away! 7/9/2010

I hope there is a nice view at the LI location, because that is the only positive thing that could can said about Almond. As for its NYC sister restaurant no such luck. I have lived and dined in NYC for 15 years is this is my 2nd worst meal in that time frame. Bad all around. Arrived as party of four at 8:25 for 8:30 reservations. We were not seated till 9:15, no apology. The waiter then took another 15 minutes to show his face. The first two selections from the wine list were unavailable. The men got the steak frites and we each took one bite and found it absolutely inedible. We would have sent it back but had zero expectation of improvement. So we paid $29.50 each for fries. The waiter never came back to ask how everything was, only to clear the plates. You would think when he saw two plates with uneaten steaks he might have inquired if we were satisfied , again no such luck. No sign of management. Poor food. Poor service, with plenty of attitude. Stay away! more

Great Restaurant Transplant 5/24/2010

Normally my wife and I go to the one in Long Island which is fantastic. I guess there is a theme here because the one in the city is amazing as well. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. I believe there is more of a variety of dishes than the one in LI. The mac and cheese and roasted chicken were excellent. We would go again if we didn't go to the original so often. Oh, and the pool table is a nice touch. more

This Is The Place 2/21/2010

Almond is magical: the bar, the dining room, the staff, the food - it all works. The menu is varied, and yet everything the kitchen produces is so satisfying: tasty curried mussels; in-house charcuterie; picture-perfect chicken, delectable roasted fish; sumptuous braised short ribs; unsurpassed steak frites; exquisitely prepared vegetables; truly memorable desserts. The list goes on. All this at a price so reasonable we don't deserve it! One visit, and you will return again and again. This is just one fun night out for dinner. Pros: Great food, Great Service, Great Price more

Can't wait to go back! 1/19/2010

Love Almond! I've been there twice in the last 3 weeks. Both times for brunch but would love to go there for dinner. Almond is great for both groups and dates. The service is outstanding and always on top of either clearing our plates or making sure we had drinks. I substituted the hash browns for a side salad and was not charged extra. Normally I have to pay more for substitutions. The ambiance is great! The wine list is well priced and so are their special cocktails. I had the Omelette Of Chorizo, Manchego Cheese & Red Onion & I Loved it! A friend of mine got the pancakes and they were to die for. I don?t have a bad thing to say about Almond. Pros: Best Food! Best Service! Amazing more

Poolsharks Beware 1/4/2010

I went up here and heard eating almonds stops you from feeling hungry, but they also make you want them more. I came out here with a friend from L.A., but I was drawn to the regulation size antique billiard table. play soft, enjoy the warm lights, meat & potatoes and a swell crowd. really great crowd. just relaxed people. maybe it's the lights, they're kinda old - but you know antique, like the pool table.. I go there for pool sessions with a buddy and a busy kitchen and - occassionally - the DJ - something about the mixture of quality ceramics, woods, irons and glass make for moving conversations - maybe it's the sonic results bouncing off the spacious unpretentious atmosphere. Pros: pool, mac & cheese, atmosphere, lights Cons: ending the night more

Love this place 12/13/2009

I work in the neighborhood and happened upon Almond while looking for a restaurant with outdoor seating. What a great find! I've been going back at least three times a month ever since. I am truly baffled by the reviews criticizing the food. Every dish I've tried has been fresh, seasoned to perfection and appetizingly presented. I particularly love the mussels and short ribs for the appetizers. The arctic char and scallops are to die for. I don't eat pork, so my only complaint is that many of the dishes include bacon or chorizo. I was really impressed with the waitstaff. Every day the chef reviews the menu with them to insure that they are informed about all aspects of the dishes. Do yourself a favor and put Almond on your list of restaurants to check out. Pros: great food, wonderful service more

What's all the fuss about? 9/11/2009

My friends all rave about the branch of this restaurant in the Hamptons, and think this one is only slightly behind. What are they thinking? Have they no taste buds? Several friends and I went for dinner recently, and everything we ordered was as tasteless as hospital food. I kept wondering if they had run out of salt and pepper in the kitchen. Yes, the scallops were perfectly cooked, the mac and cheese was nice and creamy, but nothing had any flavor to speak of. Yes, the cocktails were quite good. Maybe they figure if you drink enough of them, you won't notice that nothing has any flavor. Pros: cocktails Cons: very bland, boring food more

Nuts for Almond! 3/3/2009

Went here on a Wednesday night and it had a nice bar crowd. Had drinks and snacks with my friend and thought it was an overall great experience. The bartenders were friendly and made great suggestions on drinks and eats. The mac and cheese is not to be missed and we really enjoyed their desert. The space is airy and had a fun vibe to it, the design had a bit of a Balthazar feel to it but with wood ceilings. I will definitely go back for the food, bartenders and the scene. Pros: mac and cheese, bartenders more

Great Place to Eat.. 2/14/2009

This place has great food and staff. The sea scallops was cooked to perfection and the garlic crushed potatoes was creamy and a delightful addition to out entrees. I highly recommend this restaurant for the food, ambience and definitely drinks... Pros: Food and staff more

Easily my Favorite Restaurant in NYC 12/17/2008

The food is amazing, the cocktails are yummy and the service defines hospitality. A place to go to be comfortable, eat great food, all at a very affordable price. I go back again and again. Pros: comfortable, great service, warm, inviting Cons: its so good that you want to keep ordering more food more

Yummy, Yummy! 11/21/2008

I love this place - will definitely go back! I have never been to the hamptons so don't know what the other place is like but this place is great - the bar is nice and big and the bartenders very capable! I had the plat du jour when I was there which was the whole fish - a very generous portion and delicious sides served with and cooked perfectly. The mood of the place was friendly and relaxed - I am so glad there is finally a good solid restaurant in this space! Pros: ambience, food Cons: a bit crowded more

This Space Must Be Cursed 11/21/2008

I've been to a lot of restaurants in my day and this one I'd file in the ""never to return"" category. the food was priced well but at the obvious expense of the quality and service. The front desk staff was rude and cold while the servers were pleasant and helpful. They kept us waiting for 45 mins w/ a reservation. Management aside there's not much that could save the food. The curried mussels wanted to make me gag, and the Bacon Salad was as bland as the decor. The Steak was mediocre but well priced for $29ish., but you get what you pay for. My fault for ordering steak in a non-steak house situation. The Dessert was an overly doughy apple crisp? not very crispy. Like I said, never to return. Pros: Decent Prices Cons: Awful Front Desk & Manager, 45 min wait., mediocre food more

A great value. 11/20/2008

I'm a big fan of their place in the Hamptons. The flatiron needs more places like this. The service and vibe are warm and neighborhoody. The last time I was in we had a smoked blue fish app and shrimp cocktail to start; for entrees we had the roast chicken and pork chop. Everything was delicious. With a couple of cocktails our bill came to 90 bucks. My only quibble is that it can get a bit loud when it fills up. Pros: solid food for cheap Cons: a bit loud more

Just OK 11/19/2008

Went here for dinner with a friend..on arrival the hostess was just ok..not that friendly..the service was extremely slow...The food was mediocre...had the scallops and my friend had the lamb...If the service was better I would say go there...however, given the area...plenty of other restaurants w/better service to consider. The price was decent. Pros: Ambience was nice Cons: slow wait staff more

3rd time was a charm 11/17/2008

Good addition. 11/10/2008

Had a really good meal with two friends the other night. Apps were stellar. Not a big salad fan but the one with escarole and pistaccios was terrific. Tried the duck confit - was rich, but great - almost could make a main course from the big portion. Also tried the raw scallops (Crudo?) - light but really good - like sashimi. Mussels as a main were great - with a white wine broth - possibly the best I've had. Tried friends veal milanese - was definitely different bur really good and worth ordering. We also had the cauliflower gratin as a side which was rich but so, so good... No desserts - about $50 per person and we had a drink to start (at the bar) - then split bottle wine. No dessert- too full. Service was good/friendly/unobtrusive. Place itself was big and not too loud (although I heard it gets really crowded on Friday nights). I'll go back. Pros: food (mussels, duck, cauliflower), good music, big tables Cons: crowded on weekends more

Almond 11/6/2008

The service -- from the waiter right up to the manager -- was lazy and disorganized. There's too much to detail in this limited amount of space, but maybe what follows are two revealing moments from our evening: 1) We had to wait ten minutes to drink our wine because we were told ""We can't find any clean wine glasses right now."" (This, in a 1/2 filled restaurant.) 2) We ordered a steak. After an hour it still had not come. We asked our waiter (that is, once we finally were able to locate him.) He said, ""It'll be out in less than 180 seconds."" Another fifteen minutes passed before it finally appeared. In short, if you're always searching for a restaurant where you can shell out big bucks for heaping dishes of aggravation, this is your place! more

Looking to lose friends or business, then go here! 11/5/2008

At one point we all thought it was a practical joke the service was so bad! Talk about being embarrased... The best part is that these people actually own another restaraunt that's in business. Clearly they're not looking for a good following or to stay in business. I'm sure my group will make sure of that! The best part of the whole night was repeating the meaningless apologies to each other that never came true. more
