Happy with afrigenix 1/12/2010

Marie is great, (I saw Rougy(sp?) once also but go to Marie) she is attentive, open to suggestion, so knowledgeable, gentle and quick. I've been there 3 times beginning Nov 09 for coils and two-strand twists on very short hair and Marie was excellent both times. She twisted and coiled while my hair was wet and added oil only (2nd time), the finished result looked great, she also opened my coils (when used gel) in salon and they looked amazing. When I went back after a month she remembered everything about my hair and preferences and natural hair in general. The 2nd time I went there I had Rougy and she is sweet but i would not recommend her. The salon is cozy and chic 1 flight walk up, my twists and coils w/o additional treatments (steam etc.) only cost $71 and change, and Charmaine at front desk is a SWEETHEART! Pros: Accomodating even last minute, chic and great location Cons: Open 9-7 weekdays more

I LOVE this Place! 12/24/2009

I've been meaning to write this review for awhile I've been going to afrigenix for the last 7 months or so while I transition out of my relaxer. When I first went in there I was a nervous wreck. I got a consultation free of charge and was talked through many options. The atmosphere is hip, clean, calm and most importantly PROFESSIONAL. I never have a problem making an appointment and never have had to wait more than 5 mins for someone to start actually doing my hair. I absolutely love my hairdresser, Audrey. She's so sweet and so talented and I trust her. One of the things I really appreciate about Afrigenix is their emphasis on the end product WITHOUT compromising the health of your hair. Pros: Great styles WITHOUT compromising the health of hair Cons: Depending on what you're getting possibly expensive more

great for braids, twists, weaves 10/26/2008

i've been getting my braids done at afrigenix for years. the staff is very friendly and definitely care about the health of your hair. i trust them with braiding my hair. i've been going there for so long so they know what i like. i always get compliments on my braids. from what i've seen of other clients, they do an amazing job with weaves and extensions.\r it is clear that their expertise is in braiding and weaves. for relaxed hair styling, i probably wouldn't recommend them. they don't have many stylists there that do relaxed hair styling. also, i wish that they had better evening hours. as someone who works full time, it's tough to leave the office at 5PM for a 5:30 appointment. Pros: friendly staff, nonpretentious atmosphere Cons: wish they had better evening hours more

DO NOT GO THERE! 8/14/2008

Please, all women who have natural hair and like it, do not go to Afrigenix!! I went there on 8/14/08 for a two strand twist with extensions, the girl jacked it up!!! She had no idea what she was going!! No skills or knowledge of natural hair care. Instead of my hair being full and natural looking since i did use human hair, I looked like I just came back from chemo therpy!!!!! Very thin, no life, the girl didn't even put oils in my hair. The first thing she went for was a whole can of mousse after she was done braiding! Mousse is a sign that someone is used to working with synthetic hair in a braiding shop and not a full service hair salon!!! Afrigenix will not be around for much longer!! There are my shops around that know exactly what they are doing!!! Cons: they have creepy crawlies crawling up walls as the wash and braid your hair! Gross!! more

Nightmare 5/10/2008

I just got my hair done there today (2 strand twist) the stylist didn't use any type of grease before blowdrying my hair out so it was very painful. I brought in a picture of the style I wanted and she said she could do it; the whole thing came out horrible. She rushed the whole job because they were closing & she didn't want to be left alone in the salon with me. I shelled out $400 for a hideous style that I will have to wear for 2mths pulled back b/c the twist has no style to it. I left there very upset. If you don't care about your hair this is the place to be but if you care and want your moneys worth DO NOT GO HERE!!! Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything, the stylist have no skills.. Don't be fooled by the website... I was more

excellent job, very reasonably priced. best place to get extensions put in 3/22/2008

I loved afrigenix!!! I recently got 3 tracks of extensions put in there for my wedding and Marie did an AMAZING job and for about 1/6 the price of anywhere else. It's been 7 weeks and i'm first getting them out next weekend and then put back in the following. I never had any itching and actually haven't felt them at all! All I've had is TONS of compliments. Nobody could believe it wasn't my real hair, except that my real hair never looked so good! Pros: skilled, friendly, well priced more

Best Natural Hair Care for African American Hair Texture 9/22/2006

I'v been going to Afrigenix for the past 3 years. My experience has been a very good one. I have had numerous styles ranging from having my own natural hair twisted, to weaving and braiding. The stylist are very professional and the atmosphere is relaxing. It is also conveniently located on the upper West Side. more

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE 9/17/2003

WARNING!! DO NOT GO TO AFRIGENIX. I have never had a more terrible experience in hair care. I normally wash, blow dry and straighten (with a hot comb or flat iron) my hair. I was so disappointed with AFRIGENEX. Firstly, the woman did not condition my hair and when she started straightening it, she raked through it without properly combing it first. During the entire process she had my back turned to the mirror so I was unable to see what she was doing. I finally asked to see the mirror and I was HORRIFIED. I walked out with my hair half done and still had to pay the $67. DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU HAVE PERMED OR NATURAL HAIR. I guess they are good at braids but I will never go there again and I warn all people - DO NOT GO UNLESS YOU WANT TO LEAVE UNSATISFIED. Cons: Don't Straigten well, Only Know Braids more

Just so-so 2/5/2003

I've had my hair cut at Afrigenix four or five times. I have a short, natural style. I was always satisfied but never too impressed. Something tells me their real specialty is braids, weaves, etc, not just basic cuts. I was also dissatisfied with their new staff. One stylist didn't even discuss with me what I wanted. Once I told her she got overly helpful. I was kind of fake. She actually asked me how many times I wanted my hair washed. She didn't condition my hair and the cut wasn't even! I walked out of there looking worse than when I came in. For this reason, I probably won't go back to Afrigenix. Pros: location, good products Cons: too expensive, unskilled stylists more

If u like to be appreciated... 1/22/2003

Then u would love this place.. Right now Im letting my permed hair grow out and everyone was very helpful esp. when i asked a million questions regarding my new state of hair.. The prices are kinda expensive but it pays to look good! Pros: Friendly, Helpful Cons: Expensive more
