I recently experienced an infection as a result of a failed implant done out of the country. This resulted in the necessity for surgery. Dr Overly and his staff were very gentle,...

Keep away from this dentist. Horrible experience for me. I wish I had read previous reviews. the dentist did root canal on my molar without telling me the situation of my tooth ...

I recently went to Acahti for removal of a severely infected broken tooth. I have procrastinated on getting work done since I have had several bad experiences with dentists, but I had no choice this time, I needed this tooth extracted. I am pleased to say the procedure went very well ! They were professional, prompt and most important to me, painless. I have been to several dentist in the area and have not been pleased with any but I must say.. I plan on continuing to go to Dr. Oberly and Peterson to get my teeth back in shape. I highly recommend this dental office. more

I had been going to a dentist in Auburn who was very nice and rather cheap for most of my life.... I finally realized he wasn't doing a good job and I went to Dr. Peterson and she showed me with a camera the decay on my teeth, and the eroded state of the fillings that he had put in and said were fine... It was terrible and I have been going for check ups for years and being told that everything was fine....\r \r Dr. Peterson has my trust and the equipment to show you why you need work done, and you can see your teeth on screen during your exams. more

I went in to have a tooth under a bridge taken care of...to finish a root canal that was botched at Fall Creek Dental...a whole other horror story. The first thing Dr. Oberly started talking about was the need to be concerned about the wisdom teeth I had removed 30 years ago and when I asked him what that had to do with my present problem he said something about the cavity where wisdom teeth once were could create problems. \r Then, when he was cleaning my teeth he was extremely rough. It was the most painful teeth cleaning I've ever had. When I told him this he angrily told me, ""Well, you're making me clean your teeth for you!"" Which compelled me to switch to his partner, Dr. Peterson, who completed my root canal, except that I learned overtly that I didn't really need a root canal any more since the tooth had long since died. What I did need, and which she fixed, was an infection of that tooth's jaw bone, although she used some medication ""that your insurance doesn't cover,"" so i ended up paying Achati Dental almost $400 more than my supposedly full dental coverage would pay, so I wouldn't trust either one of them. more

Avoid Dr. Oberly! On my second visit he told me I needed two crowns right away (estimated cost $2500). My previous doctor had told me everything was fine. I went to a different dentist and he told me everything is still fine. Dr. Oberly is very unethical. He bought two very expensive crown making mills (CEREC) and he tries to recover the cost by any means. If he suggests you need a crown (or two) get a second opinion! more

Do Not Go to Acahti Dental 8/13/2010

DO NOT go to this dentist. I went to Dr. Oberly for a routine dental checkup and cleaning. He told me that I had ""extensive"" decay on 2 teeth that needed to be filled. I thought this was unusual because I had never had problems before. Another dentist examined copies of my Xrays and did not find anything wrong. Another dentist, almost a year later, did a visual exam and took new Xrays and did not find anything wrong with those teeth. I find it very unusual that he said I had 2 cavities when 2 other dentists could not find them. Go to this dentist at your own risk. more

Terrible (and unethical) work 4/28/2010

Dr. Peterson replaced one of my old fillings with a crown, and now, just one year later, it has to be completely replaced because it was done improperly. My new dentist said he suspects it never sealed correctly to the tooth, leaving space beneath it for decay to get in. The situation is worse now and I might need a root canal. I stopped seeing Dr. Peterson after that initial crown because she had recommended a ton of additional work that wasn't covered by insurance. When I got a second opinion from a trusted family dentist several states away, he said none of it was necessary. In fact, he suggested that she was unethical -- the teeth she'd wanted to fill were absolutely fine, without a trace of a cavity or other problem, and even the most proactive dentist wouldn't work on healthy teeth. He was actually quite upset and said that, from a medical perspective, he couldn't understand why she would have made those recommendations at all except to make money. I'd thought I avoided the worst by never going back to her, but clearly, I never should have let her do the first crown either. I regret the day I stepped into that office and strongly suggest that you find a different dentist in Ithaca. Cons: Shoddy crown, unnecessary procedures more

HARRASMENT?! 3/23/2010

I wouldn't be able to tell you if this service was good or not because the front desk receptionist denied me service over the phone. I told her I needed to see a dentist because I needed my wisdom teeth removed, she cut me off and asked when the last time I had a tooth cleaning was, and I replied, ""I don't know."" She said with disgust in her voice, ""YOU DON'T KNOW?"" I said,""Yes ma'am, I haven't had insurance for a very long time until now."" She told me she didn't like my attitude and then conveniently said there were no openings available for me ever. I said fine, I don't think it's a good idea if I go there, and she said GOOD because I don't like your attitude and hung up on me. I tried to talk to a manager or supervisor [Who she claimed was herself] for her behaivor and could never get through after that because she would just pick up and hang up or start hitting buttons like a 5 year old would then claimed that she would call the cops on me for HARRASMENT! more

Highly recommended! 3/18/2009

I've been seeing Dr. Oberly for over 4 years and have never had any problems. His approach is preventative and expects you to keep up your end of the bargain, i.e. brush 2x a day, floss, don't grind your teeth, and eat well. That being said, he's a business man, and like most business people he pays taxes, enormous (mal) practice insurance fees, makes payroll for several office staff and hygenists, handles your insurance claims, pays rent or mortgage, has 100's of thousands of dollars tied up in equipment to keep patients safe and comfortable, and who knows what other expenses he has to keep his doors open. So I don't begrudge him recommending expensive preventative procedures. Imagine the lawsuits he'd face if he didn't make these recommendations! He makes a diagnosis, presents you with all the viable options, and makes a recommendation. I've never felt bullied nor talk down to. Keep up the good work Dr. Oberly. Pros: Knowledgeable and professional Cons: None. more

Great People - Under too much pressure from insurance 9/28/2008

The doctors at this location really have a great dynamic, which is very important in a therapeutic relationship. I think the claims should be settled and they really did do a good job, aesthetically and also functionally on two of my teeth. Unfortunately the third needed a root canal. more

Worst dentist in the world 6/19/2008

Please do not use this dentist. Oberley has had several legal actions brought against him, and according to a local lawyer, he is unethical, quite simply. He did a horrible job on my root canal, the crown has fallen off repeatedly, and now I have to have oral surgery. When I talked to local lawyers, two different lawyers told me that he has had several claims against him and they are unsure how he still is practicing dentistry. Avoid at all costs! Pros: Nice secretaries Cons: Unethical, poor treatment more

Bad choice! 12/9/2007

I went to Dr. Peter Oberly for a dental checkup, expecting to be told I should have my wisdom teeth out and maybe that I had a cavity. Sure enough, he said so. However, to my surprise, he also said I should have an additional several thousand dollars of surgery, including a bone graft and a tumor biopsy! So I got two more opinions from trusted dentists, who agreed that I did not need all that Oberly had suggested. They couldn't even find the cavity he had mentioned! Avoid this dentist. Pros: Nice office, comfortable. Cons: Delayed appointment 2 weeks, made up problems with mouth more

Fine dental office visit...or was it?? 12/30/2006

Work done was exceptional, however, I was EXTREMELY uncomfortable with her work attire and general forwardness. She was dressed far too provocatively for a professional office. This was so much an issue with me, that I may never return to this office. I am a happily married man who doesn't appreciate seeing women demean themselves in this way. Ms. Ball is a gifted Dental Assistant who could step up her game with some self respect. Pros: Knowledgeable. Cons: Suggestively dressed. more
