Everytime I've been to Abuelo's we've always recieved top notch service, food, and atmosphere. Resteraunt is always busy.

Lost Quality 1/2/2012

Atmosphere is decent and wait staff is adequate but the food was not very good. First and foremost Abuelo's is way too spicy for the most folks in the Phoenix area. There is only one salsa and is hot. Most Mexican food places have a choice of at least two salsas: hot and mild (pico de gallo). For each choices we had tonight the food tasted like it was laden with cayenne pepper. Nothing was flavorful. The sad thing is in the past this restaurant offered flavorful meals with a low amount of added spice. Bottom line is I could not eat my enchiladas, retried beans or the Mexican rice. The owner ship needs to get a clue of whom they are catering to. more

Abuelo's Terrible Service Embassy 6/25/2011

I wish i was able to provide a review about the food but we left before ordering. The service was awful! We sat for 20 minutes (not an exaggeration) without recognition from the server. We even approached the hostess and manger, who both went to speak to the server, but she still ignored us. 3 other tables sat by us, only one of which she decided to serve.... so we left. The restaurant was nearly empty, but even if it was busy a little 'hey ill be right back" would make things okay. One bad experience is enough for us. There are plenty of other good businesses that deserve our money. DO NOT waste your time on this place. more

Terrible Food at Abuelos 6/4/2010

This was my first time eating at Abuelos and certainly my last. I test the Chile Relleno at every restaurant in Arizona that offers it and theirs was certainly the worst. The food came as essentially soup on a plate. The dish was completely flat with no differentiation between the beans, papas con chiles, or cheese, running together in one soupy mess. It looked like it was microwaved preprepared, and when asked the waitress stated the dishes are made the morning of and reheated when ordered. Even if you're ordering dinner it was made that morning, so it's not fresh and not made to order. The Chile Relleno itself was about 3 inches big, the smallest Chile Relleno I've seen. 90% of the plate was the side dish mush. If you want a great Chile Relleno in Arizona and great food in general, I recommend El Encanto in Cave Creek, Arizona or Z'Tejas in Scottsdale, but definitely avoid Abuelos. Cons: Terrible Food more

Great Food 9/12/2007

Abuelo's was recommended to us by our realtor when my husband and I were here from Oregon. We loved it!! The food was great, the service was awesome, and the atmosphere was beautiful. Since then we have taken my parents there when they came down to visit and our kids always choose to go there when we are trying to decide where to go out to eat. Everything that we have ever eaten was awesome. We highly recommend this restaurant. more

Great food and service 4/8/2007

My wife and I ate dinner here on March 30 of 07 and found the service prompt (even though the place was packed) and the food was outstanding. The chips are thin, the salsa flavorful, but not too hot, and the entrees were superb. Pros: Great service, good portions, wonderful flavor Cons: None on our trip more

Horrible service. 3/23/2007

My wife and I just walked out of this place in disgust. We came to Abuelo's because we heard the food was good. When we walked in we asked for a table for 2. The hostess we were speaking to asked the hostess to her right to seat us at table 82. We walked all the way to the back right hand side of the restaurant passing several people enjoying their meals and 2 empty booths on the way to a dark corner table. I asked the hostess if we could please be seated in one of the 2 unoccupied booths behind us which were better lit and away from the wait staff service station. She said very rudely.. "We don't have a server working that area.? I politely asked "Who is serving the people we passed in the booths right next to the one we are requesting?" She starred blankly and didn't answer. She then proceeded to grab the excess place settings and mumbled "Enjoy your meal" and walked away. Snobby service cannot be made up for by the food. Upscale or not, you don't treat new or return customers badly. There is no excuse for this hostess. My wife and I will NEVER again consider eating at this restaurant. There are numerous restaurants in the area that want your business and are willing to go out of their way to make your visit enjoyable. Choose any of these restaurants to spend your money. Abuelo's is not worth your time. Date visited: 3/23/07 3:45PM. Pros: Located close to the Peoria Sports Complex Cons: Snobby service. Stuck up attitudes. more

Good food and experience 9/26/2006

My wife, our two girls, (ages 3 1/2 and 1) and I decided to give this new restaurant a try and we are glad that we did. The ambience is wonderful and the facility and staff are very kid friendly. Our two girls were being a bit antsy, therefore, we were not able to fully appreciate the total experience. My wife ordered an enchilada plate which she stated was excelent; I ordered steak and enchilada, which was very good! During our visit they had just introduced a new appetizer (can't remember what the name is) that we ordered and it was yummy. The service was above average. We plan to visit Abuelo's again soon. Pros: Kid friendly, good food and service Cons: Just a bit pricey for family dining more

Fantastic! 2/2/2006

This place simply rocks! The MOST expensive platter is under $19...a steal for food of this quality! The house specials are expecially worthy. Los Mejores De La Casa is divine and the Papas Con Chile is excellent! Unfortunately you can only make reservations for large parties and this can lead to an hour+ wait..especially in winter. So don't be too hungry when you arrive! Pros: Great Food, Excellent Margaritas, Affordable Cons: Long Wait, Understaffed Bar more

Cons: food - mediocre, marg's - yuck, loud and too bright more
