High prices for snacks? Sure! That is where a theatre makes its money, not on your ticket. Theatre operators receive only 42% to 48% of your ticket price. And that barely covers the costs of operating the theatre. The studio and distributor receive the rest, although the box office revenue accounts for only about 18% of a studios' revenue. Most, if not all of that revenue goes for prints and advertising for the theatres. Their profits are from home entertainment and a host of other sources such as network television, cable, pay-per-view, games, etc. One-third of a studios' revenue can be from DVD's alone.Teenagers make a blockbuster at the box office while their parents buy the DVD's, surround sound and plasma TV's to watch them on. As for the pop-corn, eat up! Someone has to pay for that stadium seating, digital projection and digital surround sound. And new technology is just around the corner. Enjoy the picture!
