Biased Salesclerks 10/16/2002

I one went there looking for a specific book (one of a religious nature), asked about it, and was told by the clerk not to bother, that it "wasn't worth my time and trouble"! I don't go to a book store looking for their personal political/religious viewpoints; and if I want their opinion of MY personal preferences, I'll ask for it, thank you! People of all walks and backgrounds go to bookstores for diverse reasons - each one as worthy as the next! I found his attitude narrow-minded and offensive. I would not recommend. Pros: Large selection, Out of print books, collectibles Cons: Too opinioned, Unprofessional, Unfriendly atmosphere more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Located in downtown's loft district, A. Amitin Bookshop is an impressive sight, both inside and out. It's the oldest, largest--and dustiest--bookstore in St. Louis, boasting half a million titles. You may very well get lost in this maze of bookshelves.

    Reading List
Specialties include St. Louis history and encyclopedias, but you'll find a little of everything here, especially if you have a few hours to spend. Get-thin-quick cookbooks share the space with high art, romance trash, gumshoe mysteries, spy novels, celebrity tell-alls from the '70s and ancient Greek novels in the original Greek.

    Hidden Treasures
Venture down into the basement for strange and interesting pickings. This dimly lit, dirty space is for hard-core book grubbers.
