Best

Yes the place may be dark... but they are cleaning it up! I heard they just got a new lighting system and have always had great sound. Amazing sightlines no matter where you stan...

Worst

They're clear your drinks twice as fast, give you scowls even quicker, and then shoot up heroin right in front of your eyes. Except the bigger bartender with glasses and the woma...

I happen to like 1st Ave, I've been there for a couple shows and it can get packed! I really like that they have an upper balcony like level to get a different view. Yes, it is somewhat dirty, but it's always a good time if you go to the right performances/events. It's a good time. Pros: Performers and Events, big stage, upper level Cons: dirtyness more

You think First Ave. is Bad? Try the C.C. Club on Lyndale.... 9/29/2008

They're clear your drinks twice as fast, give you scowls even quicker, and then shoot up heroin right in front of your eyes. Except the bigger bartender with glasses and the woman with long dread-locked blond hair. They're nice. The two old men are cynical, yet too stupid to earn that title. They are over-priced, too. Something about adults who act like children around Uptown Minneapolis --- fully willing to be green, but not at all willing to be friendly. These people in Minneapolis have had religion thrust upon them as children, and they have no definition for "individuality" beyond their superficial outer-skin layers. There's no INTERNALISM in Uptown, Minneapolis. It's all on the outside. Great arts and crafts houses, though, and wonderful stained glass everywhere! There isn't a single modestly priced jazz club anywhere in this hellhole either! more

Do you like to stick to the floor? 6/28/2007

This place has a name that is about it. They have had a good history, but that is all it is now is history. The place is a pig sty. My feet stuck to the floor in several places around the club because of the dirty floors. The bathrooms were beyond disgusting with urine puddles everywhere and nothing to wipe hands with after washing them. Of course why even bother washing your hands anyway because the sinks were disgusting too. The staff was rude. They had the attitude that they were better then everyone and that you should bow down to kiss their A**. The drinks were WAY WAY over priced, come on 9 bucks for a drink? Of course that was subject to change depending on who served the drink, that fluctuated. Amazing how a drink could be 7 bucks on one side of the bar and just walking over to the other side it goes up 2 bucks for the same drink. If a person is going to go to this place while visiting Minnesota, bring a camera and just take pictures of the stars on the outside... that is about the only good thing. I still can't stress enough about the arrogant staff at this place, if your body isn't mutilated with tats or holes all over your body you aren't a person. Also you can't even smoke while having a beer. That brings me to another trick... While we were outside smoking they cleared our drinks (still half full) so we bought new ones of course and waitress simply said, "sorry, thought you left... what can I get ya?" Kinda funny since our jackets were still on the backs of the chairs. I can understand this happening maybe once but this happened to us 2 times that night. Same waitress. Of course she said the same thing again. Then 15 minutes later came with our drinks and basically slammed the drinks on the table, grabbed the 20 bucks out of my hand and walked away. I think I was supposed to get some change back from that. We left after that. Overall, this is the worst club I have ever gone to. I do NOT recommend you go here. Ever! Pros: Good History Cons: Parking, Service, DIRTY, No Value, Drinks overpriced, RUDE Employees more

Great place to catch good music 4/5/2007

We performed at 7th Street Entry, and I must say, the staff was really nice and the bartender made great drinks. It's a small, intimate club, almost like the indie/punk stages in New York. I would recommend going to check this place out at least once. Pros: Good drinks, great music, small indie feel Cons: bathroom is kind of scary, but also a definite novelty to the venue. more

It's the only place to go! 10/13/2005

Yes the place may be dark... but they are cleaning it up! I heard they just got a new lighting system and have always had great sound. Amazing sightlines no matter where you stand (not much seating room but who wants to sit during a show?). Mixture of music every night of the week. Fun latin, hip hop and dance nights weekly.... and the nice intimate feel of a small venue for big bands! Very helpful staff, and pretty good drink specials! Pros: THE BANDS!!!, variety, atmosphere Cons: no smoking more

First Ave/7th St Entry are a Staple 12/24/2004

First Avenue and the 7th Street Entry are a staple to the Minnesota Music scene. Any music fan must visit First Avenue when they visit MN. They have awesome concerts, awesom facilities, awesome service. This is a great place and I am proud to say that it is in the Midwest! Pros: Great Acoustics, Great Facilities, Great Location more

ubercool 12/13/2002

Fisrt Ave is by far the best Dance club in the TC. From the employees to the music this club is uberfun. more

first ave is past its prime 9/27/2002

I have memories of going to First Ave when I was younger, I've seen a lot of shows there. But I've also seen the decline of the building and staff. It's definately lost the appeal it once had. Pros: small-good for shows Cons: rude employees, very dirty, crowded more

GRUNDGE 8/8/2002

Don't dress up honey...cause you're gonna be full of dirt and alcohol. OKAY???? I love First Avenue..though they need to clean up the joint...it's truly a place you can be yourself..whoEVA you are and enjoy the hard techno crap they play. BARELY any hip hop, however they're open later than all clubs in the TC...because they allow 18+ after 1AM. If you don't mind pierced, overly tattooed, 18+, 40+, all types...of people...Check out First Ave. Pros: open late, open late, not pretentious Cons: 18+ after 1AM, haunted bathrooms, music more

Hey I know You!!! 8/7/2002

Enter late at the Entry 8/1/2002

I love this place for a show...but it's tough on a weeknight for a working person over 30...headliners rarely start before 11pm...even on a Monday...Come On. Why? Start the music earlier please. There is not much else to do there but stand and drink (which I am sure is why they start so late) and wait and wait...makes me not attend a lot of weeknight shows here... more

The Best Music Club in the World 7/24/2002

I have never been disappointed in a show at First Avenue, even when the band has been bad or there are too many people. This is THE must-see attraction in the Twin Cities. Pros: grungy Cons: grungy more

the legendary 6/13/2002

they've had them all play there. the mats, soul asylum, husker du and prince. they all have their roots there. who can claim that? Pros: best shows, cheap, legendary more

Refreshing 5/20/2002

Provides a bit of origionality is this often monotonous city. I saw Steve Kimock in the end of March and the performance was etherial. Because of the atmosphere of the venue, you are able to get up close and personal with the performers and still have easy access to the bar. more

Editorial
  • This small, somewhat grimy venue is essentially a more intimate annex of the legendary First Avenue. Less seasoned (or less famous) bands who aren’t quite ready for the adjacent Mainroom can be found here most nights, and the cover charge tends to be downsized accordingly. While it’s easy to characterize the Entry as an inferior stepchild to its big-daddy destination next door, the sound and sightlines are actually quite good Even high-profile locals who could fill bigger rooms are known to book a gig here now and then, if only to keep their indie/punk credibility intact. Note: The close quarters and high volume make it a poor choice for friends who like to chat during the show.
