Best Dining Experience in Telluride 1/7/2008

We have eaten at every restaurant in the Telluride area, and this one is by far the best. Having eaten here over 10 times and never been dissatisfied with any experience. Not only the wonderful ambiance and the friendly staff, but the the food is as good as the finest eateries in the world. The menu is very diverse with distinctive variations on traditional dishes as well as diverse game specials. Wine menu is superb and don't be shy about asking for the reserve list. The chef/owner has the formula for a wonderful dining experience down to a science. If you visit Telluride and don't make time to stop in, you have missed out. Pros: Food, Service, Wine List Cons: Limited Seating more

Very disappointing food 10/6/2006

We had a party of 6 adults and 2 kids and an early reservation at 6:00 - we were the first there for dinner. The table in the front room was a good spot for us, out of the way so we wouldn't bother other guests when they arrived. We got off to a bit of a bad start when, after having asked our server for a taste of a Cab they had a glass pour on, I was told that they didn't have a bottle open so they couldn't give me a taste... huh..? She asked if that made sense and I said, ""No..."" She then went on to tell me that they might not pour any more of that wine that night and if I didn't like the taste, they would be wasting the wine. This was for a $60 bottle, their cost probably around $20. We had a 6 top with kids, it's the slow season and this is how we start the meal. The server says she's sorry but it's the Manager's call - he's standing at the bar, making a $12 cocktail for one of our party who wasn't going to have the wine that it looked like we weren't going to be allowed to taste to see if we wanted the freaking wine... yeesh. What a bad call by the manager but I should have known this was a sign of the low bar (no pun intended, or perhaps it is) set in this place - the meal was pretty awful all the way around - bland, dry chicken, bland beef, bland soups... you get the picture yet..? Oh, we did get the wine, an '04 Trefethen Cab - once it opened up it was pretty drinkable but like the rest of the evening, quickly forgettable and thankfully so. Oh, and I believe the Chef/Owner who has a cookbook or a few, out, was in the kitchen... yikes. Pros: Quaint place. Cons: Everything but the quaint place. more
