Best

Last saturday, I had a date with a cute boy from Barcelona, Spain. He took me to his favorite tapas restaurant, 1492. I was very excited. Our reservation was at 9pm and we sat dow...

Worst

I should have known to leave the minute they served our sangria in cups. The sangria was good, but com'on.....it has to be served in a wine glass. The food was just average nothin...

First and last time 9/18/2005

We made reservations for 6 on Sat night at 8. We were the first ones there, yet waited 2.0 hours for our food. When the food finally showed up, entrees came before appetizers/tapas. Tapas were drenched in oil. The sangria was a rip-off at $28 a jug and mostly ice. The water was warm. The waitress was nice and apologetic. She took one entree and tapa off our check and treated us to dessert. Nonetheless, after that whole experience, we will not go back. There are too many great places in the city to waste time and money on pretentious yet crappy food/service! Pros: Nice ambiance Cons: Over priced, Bad service, Below avg food more

Evocative of Madrid 8/1/2005

Decor: Charming! Rustic decor, wooden tables, candles and commodious chairs. The highlight of the restaurant is the garden in the back. The wall of the restaurant is adorned with vines, wooden fence is decorated with white lights. Service: Very friendly, unpretentious, accommodating and with a smile. Food: Spectacular! We had Dates, bacon & almonds, succulent sweet dates wrapped in crispy bacon. Also a plate of delicious tender grilled asparagus& juicy piquillo peppers. And to make our taste buds scream with joy we treated them to salmon gravlax with mango. Thinly sliced smoked salmon complimented by thin slices of sweet mango and capers. Black paella with squid ink, even though quite good was least impressive. The seafood was a little overcooked, paella was slightly salty and rice was a little too sticky. Tucked away and discreet,1492 remains untouched by glitz and glamour, loud music and fashion shows. Pros: Garden, Rustic decor, Service with a smile more

grat ambience and laid back crowd 7/10/2005

Great place to hang out and have a chat with friends, while eating gorgeous moisty seafood paella, or enjoy the spectacular gambas a la plancha...good music and the best garden in town. I LOVE the wine in their glasses (old fashion way..common sense, different things...I am not afraid of trying new things, actually old things...) not the usual wine glasses, after all you just want to drink!!!...you will see what I am talking about. Its a little piece of Spain in the Lower East Side with servers that bring you back to Catalunia, Sevilla or other Spanish speaking country....you can practice your spanish with them and they are helpful and happy to teach you...and dont forget to try the dates, are also amazing.... more

Yummy 6/6/2005

If you want authentic tapas, this is the place to be. My friend's husband is Spanish and recommended this place to me - can't wait to go back. Make sure to try the croquettes! Pros: food, ambiance Cons: small inside more

Great ambience, yet still misses the mark 5/21/2005

I should have known to leave the minute they served our sangria in cups. The sangria was good, but com'on.....it has to be served in a wine glass. The food was just average nothing to write home about or recommend to anyone and it was small portions. With the average tapas at $8-$10 it's just not good value. The service is shoddy (sp?), the waitress dropped dirty silverware on my friends lap and didnt apologize & they never brought our coffees. This is all a shame because the ambience there is awesome and the back patio looked like a very nice setting as well. I wish I could recommend this place because it has the makings of a good restaurant, yet they come up short on value, service & just average food. Pros: Ambience, Back Patio Cons: Service, Value, Small Portions more

Datiles con bacon! 5/20/2005

best tapas restaurant in the city. Very friendly staff! They said they will be opening the garden in the back for the summer - I can't wait! Pros: food, staff Cons: none! more

Authentic 4/30/2005

These were the best tapas and sangria I've had since living in Spain. Truly authentic. The chef is from Spain, so you can't go wrong. The fried calamari is a must! Pros: Food, Ambiance Cons: Scattered Service more

Just as I remembered! 9/6/2004

I had not been to this place in quite a while. It was just as I had remembered. Great food and a great mojito. Cannot wait to get a chance to go back. Pros: food, drinks, ambience more

Great Steal 8/15/2004

Very good tapas and sangria. Best of all the wait staff is not only very nice, but nice to look at! Highly recommended for a quiet date. more

Just great!!! 6/16/2004

What a nice place! And what a huuuge garden! I've been there a couple of times, but every time is even better than before. The food was great, we got some Tapas ( the Cigalas and ham Croquetas are amazing), and the Lamb chops was just to die for, same thing for the apple stuffed Pork. The wine selection is pretty good, and the night just lovely. They also have Sangria. A perfect place to be outdoor and have lots of fun. I'll be back soon , definiteli. I do recommend this place for everybody that enjoys good food, fun and satisfaction! Pros: patio / Atmospher, service, food more

Mango Maven does 1492 11/4/2003

I found ""1492"" to be a real find in the lower east side. In the summer, they have outdoor seating in the back of the restaurant, which is romantic (even though it's separated from a basketball court by a wire fence, it's still charming). The tapas there are very, very cheap by Manhattan standards ($5-$8), and tasty! They are great to eat with the bread they serve (which comes with a very garlicky butter spread). Entrees are large and considerably more expensive ($18 and up). If you prefer variety, you can definitely make a dinner out of the tapas and bread. Definitely try the almond and dates wrapped in bacon, the garlic shrimp, and the cold platter with various meats and cheese. One downside here: waiters aren't so great, and have quite an attitude. But imagine--without alcohol, dinner for two can easily be under $30! In Manhattan! Pros: not too crowded, inexpensive, ambience Cons: service more

My worst restaurant experience in NYC... 9/8/2003

I went here on a Saturday night with a group of friends and will definitely not be going back! The service was terrible - we had to ask for the check 10 times before they brought it and we spent about 2 1/2 - 3 hours waiting for the food. When the food arrived, all we could taste was garlic - this is not a true representation of what Tapas should be like. more

a find 6/7/2003

While waiting for our reservation at one of the hot spots on Clinton st. we went for a drink in 1492. We decided to order some appetizers at the bar. They were so great that when we went for dinner at swanky ""Suba"" we were dissapointed and upset that we ever left 1492. Since then we've been back for a great meal and I'm planning a dinner for 10 in their lovely outdoor patio. It's kind on the wallet and you could visit the Freakatorium across the street... Pros: outdoor dinning, moderate prices Cons: small more

Very Pleasant 9/19/2002

Granted, the food here did not blow me away, but it was very solid. We tried a broad range of the tapas and the quality varied from good to very good. The food reminded me of Spain: not very complicated, but satisfying. I would recommend this place if you're looking for a very relaxing ambience, decent food, and extremely fair prices. more

Ole! 8/19/2002

I just had my second visit this weekend and again left very satisfied. The food is right on and creative. If you love garlic, you will not be disappointed. The place also has a great ambiance and a good crowd. The staff is very accomodating as well. Only knock is that the shrimp scampi was a little overcooked. more

Espana? Eres tu? 8/19/2002

I wanted to love this place... the sexy lighting and interior, the attractive staff, the hot location... but 1492 didn't deliver. The food was salty, paltry and overpriced. Our plate of manchego and jamon looked and tasted like Kraft cheese and Hormel sausage. The only winner was the deep fried dates wrapped in bacon and stuffed with garlic... but with only 5 pieces for the ""racion"" serving, we were left wanting more. Skip the food and go for the sangria. Pros: sangria, mojitos, sangria Cons: salty food, small portions, slow service more
