Ararat is a blend of many Mediterranean foods and a twist on what you may be used to. I've never had anything there I didn't like. Their vegetables are delicious, and you know it's a good restaurant when they pay attention to their vegetables.
But the gem of this post is the second restaurant. A diamond in the rough just opened on Airport Blvd. Arpeggio serves Mediterranean food in addition to chicken wings and 30" pizzas. Despite their rather odd mixture of food items, their Mediterranean food is fantastic! It seems to be run by a Middle Eastern family and they really care about you and get to know you and your "regular order" as you frequent the place. Best Schwarma I've ever had!

Being a newbie in the "make your own jewelry" department, I shied away from this place for quite a long time. I finally mustered up the courage to try it out and I was not disappointed. The staff was able to help me feel like less of a beginner by pointing me to books and existing jewelry for inspiration. They also helped point me in all the right directions once I figured out what I would like to make. I don't think there's a piece of jewelry you can think up that you wouldn't be able to make at this place. They have it all.

I don't know what I'd do without this fabulous consignment furniture store in downtown Austin. They have such a wide selection -- from antique-style to retro 80s to contemporary, you are sure to find something you like. Get there early though. I tend to find lots of "Sold" tags on stuff that catches my eye.

I am definitely a "cheap" shopper, so I have long avoided all boutiques in South Austin. That was, until a friend brought me to this place. The clothes, shoes, and accessories here are so cute that I can't help myself but to try everything on. And, more importantly, the prices are the same as what you would find in a department store! The staff is actually quite nice and helpful, not rude at all. I'd definitely recommend stopping by this place when on the prowl for great clothes.

I realize that the biggest audience for skating rinks is kids. However, kids are the reason I stopped going to skating rinks: always tripping you up, being sticky, and the music they play -- ugh!
But Playland has taken care of all that. They offer an Adult Night on Tuesdays!! They feature music from the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, have contests such as limbo and speed skating, and best thing -- no kids! It's true to the roots of "Old School". You never know who you might meet at Adult Night. Everyone is friendly, more than helpful, and some even wear costumes. It's just one great time and I highly recommend it to everyone.

This was a great escape when then in-laws were in town. The cave itself is really neat and easy to navigate. The guides were pretty knowledgeable. I think my favorite part about the cave tour was when the guides led you into a room and turned off all the lights, bathing you in complete darkness. It was actually really neat, even for our adult-only party. I'm not a fan of cave tours, but had a good time with this one.

My family went to this place years ago after reading about it in a travel guide. Granted, we may have been a bit older than the kids they were trying to attract, but we had what we would call a "hilarious" time. The cave pretty much sucked as it was very small and slippery. The Animal Feeding Park (called a safari when we went) was amusing as there were no animals there even resembling something exotic. But we do have some good pictures. And we often bring it up in conversations ending with "Can you believe we went to that place?" So it may be worth a visit just for that.
It may have improved over the years, but I'd imagine it's still best for *very* young children.

Volente Beach isn't bad! It's not as far of a drive as Schlitterbahn or San Antonio. And ticket prices are about half compared to either of those places. However, once you are here for about an hour or two, the small selection of rides and activities can get old. Not to mention that the staff does not control the lines for the rides, so kids cut in lines constantly.
However, it's easy to make a family day out of this trip. Bring a cooler full of lunch and enjoy it under the covered picnic pavillion. Bring a volleyball and start up a game either in water or the sand. And enjoy the sand beach in all the ways you can. It's nice to have something similar to the big waterparks so close to town, but don't expect a big waterpark. Come prepared as if you are visiting a State Park with a few bonus rides and you'll enjoy the day much more.
