Good But Not Great 2/5/2007

Back to the Land is a long-time Park Slope health food store. I go there only when I absolutely need to. Why? The healthy markup typical of many health food stores is prohibitive. While they have a good produce selection, the lettuces and greens are wilted at times. There's decent product selection, but we've all seen better. The narrow aisles and display areas are filled with staff members who often won't defer to customers who need to get by. If you're in a rush, claustrophobic or prone to panic attacks, don't go when it's either very busy or the stroller set is there. This is a good place to go if you're looking for supplements/remedies, though they're a bit skimpy on homeopathic remedies. But here's something I can't get over – there are times when I've asked for a supplement (much of it is out of reach) and the staff member has taken it upon him or herself to share their knowledge of what the supplement is and what it can do. Hello! You're a clerk and probably not a licensed medical practitioner. The employees at the checkout are lovely. more
