Who likes going to see the dentist? Since I've been a patient of Dr. Jim Sarji, I don't mind half as much. He has a gentle, straight-talking manner and when he advertises that his procedures are pain-free, he means it.
He offers a full range of services from checkups, preventive care and surgical procedures to the latest cosmetic offerings.
I don't have dental insurance and have found his fees to be fair and affordable. His office has also offered payment plans for more expensive work, just in case.
The hygienist has a good touch with cleanings. I have sensitive teeth and found that I don't feel like jumping out of the chair every few seconds when she's doing her job.

Back to the Land is a long-time Park Slope health food store. I go there only when I absolutely need to. Why? The healthy markup typical of many health food stores is prohibitive. While they have a good produce selection, the lettuces and greens are wilted at times. There's decent product selection, but we've all seen better. The narrow aisles and display areas are filled with staff members who often won't defer to customers who need to get by. If you're in a rush, claustrophobic or prone to panic attacks, don't go when it's either very busy or the stroller set is there.
This is a good place to go if you're looking for supplements/remedies, though they're a bit skimpy on homeopathic remedies. But here's something I can't get over – there are times when I've asked for a supplement (much of it is out of reach) and the staff member has taken it upon him or herself to share their knowledge of what the supplement is and what it can do. Hello! You're a clerk and probably not a licensed medical practitioner.
The employees at the checkout are lovely.

I've opted for Eyes on the Slope for years. Not only can I get a solid eye exam, but the extensive eyeglass offerings are stylish, varied and up to the minute. Their optician was born to help you choose the correct frames for your face. They really know their stuff here.
Also, I was having trouble with the comfort of my contact lenses and the optometrist was willing to work with me until I found the right brand. That's dedication.

The markup is high and the selection is unremarkable. Go here if you're either in a hurry or you're not into budgeting your food dollars. If I need a supermarket, I'll go to C-Town on Ninth Street.

While I've never had invitations or announcements printed here, I've seen their work and it is excellent. Lion in the Sun offers a unique selection of fine papers, greeting cards, wrapping paper and gift items. You'll receive a warm welcome when you walk in and the staff is extraordinarily helpful yet they don't hover. Good lighting, nice layout and an attractive design all add to the experience. This is the way to run a business.

I love Indian buffets. All that variety. The medley of flavors and spices. It can make an Indian food lover melt. Salaam Bombay has perhaps the best and most extensive lunchtime buffet in Manhattan, seven days a week.
The food is fresh and flavorful. You'll line up for salads, appetizers and some tasty standards like tandoori chicken, lamb rogan josh, chicken tikka, etc. There are also vegetarian dishes and desserts. The offerings vary from visit to visit.
Expect the place to be crowded on weekdays, but not so much on weekends when you can substitute Indian buffet for the usual, predictable brunch fare that's served all over the city.

Second Helpings has a varied menu of sandwiches (on wheat or spelt bread), wraps, soups, entrées, juices, baked goods and desserts for vegetarians, vegans and non-vegetarians. Most of the staff is knowledgeable about ingredients and preparation, and can tell you what's vegan, dairy-free, wheat-free, gluten-free, etc.; however, it would help if the dishes were better labeled in this regard.
The food usually seems quite fresh, but I suspect some of the entrées and sides occasionally appear for more than one day. If not, it sometimes looks that way.
The staff has been consistently friendly and helpful over the years. Service is only slow when there's a bottleneck in the restaurant, which happens from time to time because this is a popular eatery. If you're eating in, be prepared to bus your own table.
They also offer catering and seasonal/holiday menus.

It's relaxing to dine at a restaurant where you don't have to question the waitstaff about gluten or wonder about the possibility of hidden gluten. As for the waitstaff, they are great.
There's plenty to choose from – pizza, salads, risotto (in many combinations), panini, and desserts. It's all fresh and even my non-celiac dining partners seem to love it.
The dining area is a small space and often packed at lunch and dinner. Don't be daunted if you have to wait a little for a table because it's worth it.
