A tiny little software haven in the middle of nowhere. 6/28/2005

Everyone knows where Kennedy's is, right? That's where all the students go for their school-related software needs, right? Well, not the savvy student who knows that if you walk out of Kennedy's front door and turn right, follow the sidewalk down to the Peterson Service Building, enter this huge building that looks like a place to store supplies and service vehicles, and follow the signs you'll end up at this little bitty store called the UK Computer Store. After desparately searching all over Lexington (and I mean ALL over Lexington) for a version of Microsoft Access to complement my student version of Microsoft Office purchased at Kennedy's ($128), I could not find Access anywhere in town, and any place that could order it for me wanted another $229, or I could buy the Microsoft Office Professional edition for $329, and take Access home that day. As I needed the program that day for an online class, I was just about to give up and order it when a salesperson at the LCC bookstore told me about the UK Computer Store. Here, I discovered, with nothing more than your sweet little student ID in your hot little hand you can walk out with the student liscensed version of Microsoft Professional for $70 including tax. Now, you would have to understand how many stores I had visited and how many times I had been told that the student version didn't come with Access to understand fully why I argued with the nice lady behind the counter here that there was no way she could expect me to believe that Access was on that disk, along with the entire Office Suite (most of which I already had from my student/teacher version from Kennedy's) for $70. "I just need Access" I kept telling her. Finally she smiled sweetly and said, "It doesn't make sense to me to pay over $200 for Access when you can get the full version of it here bundled on this disk for $70." Finally she was speaking my language, maybe. I gave her a cock-eyed unsure look and told her that if this didn't have the full version of Access on it I would most certainly be back. I was so surprised and relieved to discover that the full version of Access and also Publisher was on there, in addition to all of the programs I had already paid $128 for before. Now, thankfully, this is my first go-to place for all of my software needs. more
