Not a bad addition to downtown Fairport 9/3/2006

Donnelly’s Public House Fairport, NY Donnelly’s is tucked back off of Main Street Fairport right on the train line. As you walk in, there is an expansive bar with an impressive 20 beers on tap. Donnelly’s also has a dining room, but we chose to eat at the bar. The bartender promptly greeted us and we both decided on Smithwick’s. It’s an old standby for us, and I should have been more adventurous with all of the other beers available, but I was just in the mood for a good Irish beer. The menu is a good selection of bar food with slight twists. They also offer dinner specials nightly. I chose a Taco Salad and my dining companion chose an order of wings. The Taco Salad was a good size and I was intrigued by what the Cheddar and Jalapeño shell would taste like. Unfortunately, the shell did not crisp as expected and the taste was quite bland. Other than that, the salad itself was decent. The Wings that were ordered smelled delicious and came with the requisite bleu cheese and celery. My dining partner was intrigued by the taste. It wasn’t the usual Buffalo sauce. After tasting one myself, we came to the conclusion that the extra spice tasted like coriander. We both decided we prefer a more traditional wing sauce. There seemed to be a few regulars around the bar and the restaurant itself was clean and attractive. I prefer my regular Fairport haunt of FVI and wouldn’t see myself returning frequently. Overall, however, not a bad place to stop, even for just the choice of beers! more
