Nothing but pure, unadulterated reggae 2/19/2006

A friend's father used to own this place, so one New Year's Eve, when we were bored witless at a glitzy but unbearably dull party at a U Street venue, she suggested we come here. "Now, they play reggae music, real reggae," she warned, as if that was a bad thing. She spent the first few years of her life in Jamaica. While my grandmother was from there, I'd only been to the island for vacations. "Let's go," I said. We wound up dancing the night away until the wee, wee hours. There's nothing fancy here...it's a little storefront that you might not even notice unless it was your destination. Inside, it's small. But the music is good, and if you get there early enough, they might still be serving some traditional Jamaican dishes. The neighborhood is a little iffy, but there is some parking out back. Just use your common sense and you'll be fine. A good time if you want an authentic experience. more
