Jokes on Us is in the middle of downtown Laurel, Md. It's very large, so you won't have to worry about getting a seat, and all seats have a great view of the stage. Prices are moderate and, along with drinks, they also serve fast food. There's a large parking lot on the premises, so you won't have to worry about that. The acts here are top rate...I've gone on to see people I've heard here on television. One even is a regular in a television series.

I love Troy Artis' clothing....it's workable, wearable and still edgy. Affordable too. His clothing line for women seems to focus on items you would wear to the office or out for the evening, and they're styled to fit real women, not twiggy fashion models. And though his work is original, the prices are not any higher than you would expect to find in a mid-range department store. Troy himself is a very warm, very engaging person too. Support this talented, young designer.

Colonel Brooks is a basic kind of restaurant -- homey, good food, good prices -- that seems to cater to the Catholic University crowd...professors and students. There's something very soothing about the atmosphere..sort of dim, with furniture in dark woods and comfort foods on the menu. The prices are very good. You can eat well here for less than $10. A parking lot out back provides plenty of spaces, but there's also adequate parking on the street.

Hats off to whoever thought of this place. If you like the tropics, and enjoy fun, quirky and funky places, come here. It's a tiki bar with Caribbean surroundings in the middle of DC, complete with sand, palm trees and ceiling fans. The food is OK, but you come for the atmosphere. If you're missing the tropics, or missed out on taking your vacation to the islands, come here for a fix.

The Dance Place is snuggled along a side street in Brookland, an area near Catholic University, off Rhode Island Avenue in Northeast, that's seen a real estate resurgence. It makes sense, because it's such an interesting area. I like the fact that the Dance Place has been there through all of Brookland's phases. This is a great, small theater for seeing interesting dance companies from all over the country (maybe the globe). Every seat in the house is good, the prices are low and it's so small that you'll have a chance to speak to company members afterward. You'll be able to find parking on the street no more than a block away.

Buying a house - and securing a mortgage - is never relaxing, but Narda McLeaf Namrow at Mason-Dixon will help you through the whole process, especially if this is your first time. She's patient, energetic, friendly and explains everything that's going on. And she'll also give you advice on other things you need to do...such as get a home inspection, find insurance, or explain how the closing process will work. The whole process is stressful, as any homeowner knows, but Narda will help make it less so.

Back to Chi is a storefront, new-age health-related business in Alexandria's Del Ray section that, among other things, offers free trial massages on jade-roller beds made by a manufacturer called Ceragem. I had a friend who swore by these massages and got me to go with her one day. The place itself is very pleasant. Massages are offered regularly throughout the day, and while one group is receiving massages, the next group hears a lecture explaining the science and medicine of how the beds work. I could not relay the details to you, but I will say that I felt incredible for 24 hours after my massage. The visit itself was somewhat painful to me - but I have a bad back and that could be why. I also was told that some people experience pain on their first visit or so, until they get used to the feeling. While I was here, and waiting for my massage, someone sat me under some special light (infrared? Does that make sense?) for about 10 minutes and -- this really happened -- I felt the deep, deep level of relaxation I've felt only a handful of other times in my life...one was after experiencing a Native American sweat lodge in upstate New York. Another was after having a Reiki massage. That was just from the light. Go visit Back to Chi. They seem to have a wealth of knowledge about alternative health issues.

I used to go to Andre Chreky when my former stylist - an African-American man who specialized in African-American hair - was based there. I found the prices among some of the highest in the metro area, along the lines of Red Door and places on that order. If that's what you want to spend your money on, this probably is a place you'd want to do it...sometimes they serve cappuccino or wine, and the upstairs rooms where they do massages and facials are very relaxing too, with New Age music, hardwood floors and aromatherapy. This also used to be the only place I could buy Yonka products. But I also will tell you that my stylist left out of frustration with the management's insistence at treating some African-American staffers badly, and at seemingly becoming disturbed or jealous when some African-American stylists did well and developed a following. That's when I stopped going too -- you've got to speak with your money, if nothing else. I also noticed that sometimes the staff was wonderful, other times rude, snippy and snobbish. The place is worth checking out at least once, maybe more, just be prepared to spend some money and to deal with the occasional "Vancome Lady" (or even more, if you're a person of color).

City Lights has some of the freshest, most well-prepared Chinese food you'll have in the metro area - on the scale of the chain P.F. Chang's, but with a lot more character and originality. Everything is good, and plentiful. The restaurant is very pleasant, with bright lighting in a cozy space a few steps down from street level. Prices are great, particularly for the quality of food, surroundings and service, and though City Lights is popular, you won't have to wait long for a table. Very close to the Dupont Circle metro.

With just weeks to go before a marathon, I completely jacked up (high-level medical term) some muscles in my leg. The pain was horrible and, for awhile, I had a lot of trouble walking. An orthopedist told me I should probably stop running for several months - not to mention scrap the marathon. But I didn't want to hear that because I'd invested so much time into training. Andy P. at NovaCare was familiar with hard-headed runners, and also is good at what he does, so he got me to my goal.....to heal, and be able to finish the marathon, regardless of time. He was laid back, funny and left me with tons of stretches and exercises to continue to do after my treatment was done. He even gave me a long, meticulous routine to do before and after my runs, and even for race day. It was time consuming, but it WORKED. Within weeks of beginning treatment with him, I was able to run 20 miles (slowly), and I finished the marathon. The folks here are friendly and laid back and seem to know what they're doing. They're also very close to the Beltway, in the Tyson's area. Go see them.
