Taraval Okazu Ya is not "kooky," but it's good Japanese food AND I don't feel self-conscious about taking my two young kids there. The owners and staff are really nice, and I just manage the meal so that there's always something for the kids to do or eat. When they get restless by the end, I have the waiter bring ice cream.
Be sure to order the creamy roll. Also try the snake roll--it's the only maki I've ever had that has cilantro in it!
