The restaurant was opened in 1999 by George Moudry. He wasn't a restauranteur, just a Chicago native that missed his dogs.
The people are friendly (with those accents, they ain't from around here - ex-windy city natives), the food is good, the atmosphere...well, who needs atmosphere anyway.

I've only been there for breakfast, but they've always been great. The ginger pancakes are my favorite. They have everything on the menu that you'd expect to see on a diner menu, plus, of course (we are in Texas, after all), the Tex-Mex standards. If you decide on pancakes, they're happy to fill or top them with a fruit (bananas, strawberries, blueberries...) or chocolate chips, or all of the above, if you'd like.
The portions are large and the prices are good.

I've been to this Popeye's at least a dozen times. Sometimes it's ok. It's never fast. Sometimes it's just painful....what are they doing??? going out back to catch the chickens? what could possibly take this long?
That said, Popeye's is the only fast food chicken place that I like. The chicken is good and I really enjoy the red beans and rice. The biscuits are THE BEST!

The best? I think so. The burgers are very good. The fries aren't my favorite. The best part is the service. You order your burger and get a table number. They bring out your food and there's usually someone coming around to check and see if you need napkins or a peppermint.
It's a little more expensive than the other chains, but it's worth it to me.
They also have "frozen custard", which is a premium ice cream made daily. There's always vanilla and chocolate and a flavor of the day which is also listed outside on their marquee.

Threadgill's is a fun place to take out of towners (espicially if they've heard of it).
You can check their website to see who's playing. The food is good (though blander than I remembered it....). The vegetables used to be "bottomless" (all you can eat) - now they'll serve you seconds only (which should be plenty anyway). They've always had lots of vegetable dishes and now they have the vegetarian menu seperated into vegetarian selections and non-dairy selections as well, which is really nice if you have vegie types in the group - they don't have to feel silly grilling the waiter about what's in the green beans.

The sausage and brisket are great - get a combo plate and try the baked potatoe casserole. I love it! And for dessert they have homemade peach or cherry cobbler. If you're lucky they have both. You can ask for half and half -- that's the best of both worlds.
;-)
The two-meat combo plate described above will run you about $8.50. Well worth it.

This place is a little more upscale than a lot of Austin restaurants. Not that it's stuffy, it's still casual, but just a bit more sophisticated.

The desserts are created daily at the restaurant and can be savored to the tinkling of the piano (check the website to see who's playing when).

Sandy's has been here for several decades. The place is old (and it shows), so if you're a clean freak, don't come here.
If you like good old fashioned greasy burgers off the grill this is the place!

Yes, it's a chain restaurant, but it's a high end chain (not an Olive Garden). It's one of the Brinker International restaurants (Chili's is the other major one in Austin).

The food is delicious as are the desserts. Save room if you can! The smothered chocolate cake is served warm -- too die for! If you're pretty full already, try the tiramisu - it's light and has a caffiene to keep you from sagging after a heavy meal.

It's a homey and inviting atmosphere.
Go in when you aren't in a hurry, relax, and enjoy. After lunch, take a walk in the garden and stop in at their giftshop.
