Ignore the store, go for the pie 8/20/2005

Komoda Store in Makawao on the island of Maui is exactly what a hole-in-the-wall should look like. Inside the store is dark, the aisles narrow, and the employees all look like they’ve been there for several decades, at least. Part of the store is your basic sundries, perfect for picking up emergency items without having to drive to Kahului or Wailuku. The other part -- and this is what attracts folks outside of Makawao -- is the bakery, where their famous cream puffs and azuki bean pie are sold. The former is exactly what it sounds like – flaky pastry with a creamy filling. Perfect. The latter is almost like eating a giant manju (flaky Asian pastry with a bean filling). I’m not sure how often folks buy stuff from the store (some of it looked pretty dusty on the shelf), but the bakery is always busy and sells out rather quickly. Ordering ahead of time is recommended. more
