The market leader in Hawaii 8/18/2005

The folks at Servco must love their jobs. Not only are they Toyota's exclusive wholesale distributor for the Hawaii market, they are also the dominant Toyota retailer. Considering that Toyota has the highest market share of any make in the state, they must be doing something right. Toyota City is located in Mapunapuna near the Honolulu International Airport. Servco also has a service operation in downtown Honolulu, but it does not sell cars from that location. It's not just the cars -- though Toyota's reputation for high quality, if somewhat boring, vehicles can't hurt. The entire dealership experience is refreshing. For one thing, you'll notice a lack of dealer markup (a.k.a. "adjusted market value" or various other terms). You'll also notice a fairly laid back attitude among the salespeople -- no pressure at all. Pricing is straightforward. Toyota City uses a standard method of pricing, landing somewhere between invoice and MSRP. There is no negotiation and no cross-shopping other Toyota dealers on Oahu since, yes, they are all owned by Servco. For those who enjoy getting a fair price upfront without the hassle, this is perfect. For others who enjoy squeezing the most out of a desperate salesperson till they cry uncle, shopping at Toyota City (or any Servco dealership for that matter) is not for you. Given Toyota's growing market share in Hawaii, Servco's strategy seems to be a winning one. more
