They wrecked UH Wrecking 8/19/2005

United House Wrecking used to be a treasure trove of obscure architectual elements and furniture scrounged (or more likely purchased) from buidling about to be demolished. I fondly remember bright red London phone booths, oversized amusement park figures, marble fountains from Gatsby-era mansions, etc. But as the store became more popular, they began to mix in more and more "new" antiques. There were still a few interesting oddities for those willing to dig through the dusty shelves (solid wood doors with leaded glass insets) were a particular favorite. Since the renovation of the store a year or so back, UHW has become an overpriced design center. I wonder if they even bother looking for demolished buildings anymore. Skip it and head to the Shippan Point antique shops if you're looking for authenticity. more
