Golden Slippers is the most renowned dance studio in the area. They offers a variety of classes including the basics jazz, tap, and ballet, plus modern, lyrical, and hip hop. There are classes available for all skill levels as well as for adults. The teachers are mostly excellent, but there are always a few mediocre ones in the group, and Golden Slippers is no exception. The studio also holds large scale recital at local venues such as Chrysler Hall. They conveniently have a number of locations throughout the area. One really great thing is the pricing plan - you can either pay by hours/week (from 1-4.5 hours) or you can buy unlimited classes. Highly recommended!

Gymstrada is a decent gymnastics school for children/teens. They offer classes geared towards different ability levels as well as age groups. New clients can get one class free as a trial. They do also have elite level gymnastics, so it is great for children to start here and be able to stay at the same school until the pinaccle of their career. The coaches are excellent, but some are hard on the students, while others are warm and encouraging. The facilites are slightly old, but are kept up well. They also host birthday parties, but they are quite expensive. Have your child take a trial class here and judge the coaches for yoursel.

These stores are a dime a dozen in India, but far harder to find in the US, so this store was a great discovery. They carry a great selection of Indian jewelry - both traditional as well as modern styles. For non-Indians, the difference from Zales-type stores is that Indian jewelry stores mostly sell 22kt jewelry, and pretty much only sell 18kt when its necessary (ie - diamond settings). Also, the jewelry is sold by the weight of gold, not just random prices for each piece. This generally makes the jewelry a lot cheaper, and you get better quality gold. The staff is very nice and helpful as well, so do check it out!

Maxim is a great oriental grocery store with a wide selection of items including fresh meat and seafood. In addition to groceries, they also sell housewares, cloth, etc. However, one problem is that the store always smells very strongly of seafood. I can't spend too long in there because of the smell. Also, the staff isn't the most helpful nor friendly. But if you just want to pic up some oriental groceries and don't care much about service or ambiance, check out Maxim.

A few years ago, I would have given this place 5 starts - before all the big chains started doing it, you could listen CDs for sale on headphones in the store. It was a big deal back in the day, so Planet Music was somewhat of a hangout spot on weekends since you could explore new music without buying it. The novelty has long since worn off, and this store is expensive, more expensive than those bigger chains. However, they do have a good selection of music, especially classical. Go check it out, but make sure you comparison shop!

Hanging out at Plan 9 was a great way to kill time on a slow day in Harrisonburg. They had a great eclectic selection of music, both new and used. The staff is always cool to talk to and are very knowledgable. There is a wide selection of used CDs and the prices are great. Plan 9 will also but your used Cds. A lot of times they also have some great music posters and postcards available for free! JMU students, if you haven't already checked Plan 9 out, hope on the bus asap!

York Flowers is a wonderful florist conveniently located in DC and walking distance from the metro. The selection of flowers available is gorgeous and the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the ones I have had help me in the past really have an artistic eye. Their flowers also seem to be of better quality than other florists I have seen in the area. Of course, you pay for the quality, but its worth it!

Classic bakery is by far the best bakery in the area. They have an excellent light fruity cake (I believe it is Middle Eastern style) that is their signature. They make large cakes to order but also have a number available ready made. They also have individual serving size bakery treats, perfect for taking to a small gathering where an entire cake may not be appropriate. The prices are normal for a specialty bakery - higher than a grocery store but sooo much better tasting. Check it out next time an occasion calls for cake!

I bought my mother a gift certificate from here for Mother's Day. She ended up using $45 of it for a pedicure. $45! For this much, she should have gotten the best pedicure in the world. However, she said it was possibly the worst she has had, definitely worse than ones she pays half the price for. The didn't have massage chairs or hot towels, and only massaged her legs up to her ankles. The polish application was poor, I could have done a better hand left handed - she actually had to come home and redo it! Given that it was a spa, she should have been pampered more - that is what I intended when I gave her the gift certificate. Since her pedicure was so poor, she doesn't even want to use the rest of the gift certificate. Not recommended.
