For most of us east-siders, skate east may seem a little bit shady, but upon closer inspection... it really is not all that bad.
I would recommend Skate East for children's birthday partys, social functions or school events. I don't think I would ever take my children there otherwise. It seems to have a fairly safe environment-- but I would always accompany children. There is no telling how much fun there is to be had at a good ol' fashion roller rink.
