Most expensive bad meal ever 8/25/2009

A deplorable Sunday evening dinner at this eatery that is ranked somewhat below the best-reputed restaurants on the Hill. Poor service from the get-go. Waitress claimed that the larger, well-lit table we two wanted was reserved, so they stuck us in a dark corner, and we never saw that other table occupied during our meal. As to the meal, first, we each ordered the seafood special, which differed from the regular seafood pasta dish on the menu only by the addition of clams, doubling the price of the menu item to $29.95 each (as we later found out). You would think it a waiter's duty to inform the unsuspecting diner of such a radically elevated price, but ours did not--taking advantage, of course, of people's reluctance to look as if money mattered. Now, if the food were of a quality commensurate with the price, we would not have felt too bad, but the dish that came to us, heaped with an excess of pasta of the wrong kind (linguini, though we'd ordered cappellini) and garnished with a bunch of clams--the only acceptable ingredient in it--was topped with three overdone grilled shrimp; dry, tough, tasteless disks that were apparently scallops; and inedible scraps of some unidentifiable other fishfood . We should have returned the dishes when we saw the linguini, but we politely didn't (service was so slow, we'd have waited another 45 minutes). The waiter at first offered us, in compensation for the pasta error, a dessert on the house, but at the end of this dreadful meal, of which we ate only the clams and a few forkfuls of linguini, he did not repeat the offer, and by then we didn't care to remind him. With two drinks, one beer and one glass of wine, the resulting bill was exorbitant, the biggest waste of money I've ever experienced in this my hometown of Providence. I could have eaten well at high-ranked restaurants only feet away, for about the same. My advice: give the place a wide berth. Pros: fixed wobbly table Cons: bad food, poor service more
