I dropped into this place a long time ago, probably about eight months ago, based on a recommendation by some dude at a bar. Unfortunately that was on a Sunday, which yielded a difficult drive only to end up settling for Jim's (which will never happen again, after my recent life-changing experience at Talk of the Town, 3020 S. Broad). But one weekend, my good friend and fraternity brother Billy Madison (real name) came down from Long Island (Strong Island, as he refers to it) for a Philly visit. I figured such a visit would be a nice chance to experienc one of the city's many obscure cheesesteak locations, and why not Gooey Looie's or however it's supposed to be spelled.\r
This place is in a little shopping center at Moyamensing and Moore, in South Philly. We took Second Street south in a hopeful journey and found it. But let me add emphasis to the obscurity of the location.\r
The interior resembled a Mom 'n Pop store, with a bunch of nonsense you'd find in a convenience store like bags of chips, medicine, newspapers and the like. Canned food. Bill and I placed our orders. Cheesesteak with american for me, buffalo chix chzsteak for him. The prep time was about five or six minutes, which we spent standing around amidst a handful of flyer-geared folks who I'd call townies if it weren't South Philly. We ate in the car, both having gotten large orders and paid about $6.50 apiece. This thing was colossal, as big as two Jim's cheesesteaks for the same price and none of the line. The meat was a little dry, and the roll nothing to write home about. But it was just the lunch I needed, and left plenty to reminisce upon later in the evening. Definately worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood and you have a monstrous appetite. But why that would happen to most people, I have no idea.
