I've been to the Bagel Bakery on Alvarado St. about five or six times now.  I only go because of its location in downtown Monterey.  The bagels are--well, bagels!  Cream cheese is cream cheese, right?  Their coffee bar is average.  I'd like to see insulated containers for the cream.  Instead, they choose to leave the half-and-half in room-temperature store cartons.  The service is horrible.  I repeat: Horrible!  Apparently, it's owned by an older Asian couple.  The husband has no personality.  The only words he'll mutter contain the price for your order.  The guy has a poker face to be envied.  The wife is a little more tolerable, but not friendly.  And if you get their son (or nephew?), forget it!  The kid appears to be serving a sentence.  It's as though none of the staff want to be running a bagel shop.  Anyways, I'll go back, but like I said, it's only for the location.
Pros:  Location and price.
