I first went to Panna II in 1993 and it's been one of my favorite restaurants in New York ever since. Yes, it's crowded. Yes, the waiters are a bit daft. And yes, you can get better Indian cuisine in the city. However, the atmosphere is overwhelmingly ridiculous and the environment so conducive to fun, that you're likely to fall in love with this place if you take it on its own terms. Shop for some exotic beers at the deli down the street -- they'll be happy to provide empty glasses, and go with a big group and try one of everything from the menu. I've tried, but never been able to spend more than $30 here.
Pros: Cheap, fun, original decor
Cons: Crowded, loud, potential wait outside
