I've always considered beauty services to be too expensive to be worth it, especially when I don't have the money to burn. However, sometimes a girl needs some pampering. I came across Silk Nail Salon in my search for quality and affordable manicures and pedicures. They also have waxing services amongst other things. Both "quality" and "affordability" are difficult to find together when it comes to salons, but somehow I discovered it at Silk. Their service is professional and the salon itself is clean, pleasant, and well organized. It's not your posh spa experience, but at $30 for a Brazilian wax and $27 for an hour-long lotion pedicure, I'd say it's a lot of bang for your buck.

I like a good, cheap haircut since I can't afford much more than cheap. The problem is, more often than not, you get what you paid for. It's hard to get an up-to-date cut for a low price. I've gotten my hair cut by a few people who work at this Hair Masters, but the only person that had me walk away satisfied was Kelli. She's not very talkative or bubbly, but she's fast and knows what she's doing. I recommended Kelli to my sister and she really likes her too. (She might be Kelly, not Kelli...I'm not sure, but I guess it doesn't really matter too much.)

City Lights Bookstore is an independent bookseller in San Francisco that was highly involved in the "beatnik" movement, making it a "Literary Landmark." Immersed in alternative culture, City Lights has expanded over the years to offer paperbacks and hardbacks from major publishers and an expansive range of books from small, hard-to-find, specialty publishers, with a highly knowledgable staff to offer suggestions. Throughout the changes and growth, however, it has retained its original intimate and casual quality. It is an important and historical part of the San Francisco experience. Drop in to learn about the historical events that took place right where you're standing, or pick up an interesting read.

I want to preface this by saying that St. Francis Memorial Hospital is a great hospital to go to. They were very helpful and efficient when I came in sick and didn't have a local doctor. However, the low rating is because of the confusion regarding my insurance. I remember giving them my insurance card to make a copy, but somehow it got lost or there was a miscommunication between the emergency room and the medical office because they kept sending me bills that insurance should have covered. They also got my address wrong even after I corrected the mistake. The mess lasted for several months and got to be quite a nuisance.

I'm not a huge fan of romantic comedies, so it takes something extra to make me actually enjoy one. Although Love Actually didn't blow me away or make me feel all warm and fuzzy, it did make me laugh quite a bit. The movie explores the many experiences of love, good and bad, through several couples, and I liked the variations and woven storyline. Not everybody had the perfect relationship, but everything seemed to work out in the end because of love. All cheesiness aside, it was the British humor and Billy, the bluntly honest, washed up sell-out, aging rock star that won me over. Oh yeah, and I thoroughly enjoyed Hugh Grant as well.

Elephant: a candid look into the lives and perspectives of different high school students on the day that a Columbine-esque school shooting would take place. Although it is horrendous subject matter, the viewer in this case is very detatched and purely observant. There isn't much exploration into the depths of character whatsoever, but the main focus of Elephant wasn't around character anyway (characters were hollow and merely served the purpose of setting the story: who's who and what's their role in the high school social circle). The result is a disturbing glance at seemingly surreal violent acts. I didn't expect to see literal shots being fired and people being killed, which I suppose reflects a real situation where the unexpected comes out of nowhere. I didn't think it was the best film in the world, but it is a movie worth seeing, only because it is an interesting film regarding a current problem. Out of everything, I liked the overlap in editing.

Easily the best movie I have ever seen, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an atypical love story that explores the possibility of erasing an ex-lover from one's memory, and the frantic struggle to hold onto the memories that made one fall in love in the first place. The characters spend most of the movie within the recesses of memory and the limitless imagination of the human mind, which makes for fantastical imagery. It's a movie about second chances, and how love is never easy. During heartbreak, forgetting everything seems like the best way to heal, but Eternal Sunshine points out that happy memories are also lost, memories that should be cherished. I thought Jim Carrey was brilliant, and was glad to see him show the world his range as an actor. The artistic concept and its execution was so original and made for such a beautiful and thought-provoking experience.

I'm not a big fan of anime, but I watched Grave of the Fireflies because it was highly recommended to me. The story takes place during WWII in Japan, right after the bombing. It's about how two young siblings try to survive the aftermath without their parents. Incredibly poignant. I cried. You'll forget that you're watching an animation.

Kill Bill, Volume 1 can only be described as badass. It's a satirical portrayal of the undercover world of professional killers. Right from the get-go, the entire movie follows "The Bride" character's quest for revenge as she kills the members of a team of assassins in order to get to Bill, her former boss, who tried to murder her on her wedding day. This movie isn't for everybody. There's a lot of fighting, a lot of blood (although the gore wasn't always realistic). I know people who absolutely loved this movie, and others who didn't really get the point and felt nauseous afterward. Stylistically, Kill Bill was inspired by many film genres, which Quentin Tarantino explains in the "Making of..." special feature on the DVD. I, for one, appreciate his style and excitement for what he does. I found the movie to be greatly entertaining, and the music was the icing on the cake that actually gave it the punch to make it even better. I'd want RZA to produce my theme song.
