It was pretty good, and I don't really like eating Chinese food. more

Warning 8/3/2010

Yujean Kang's has always been a great place where you can get lunch & dinner, artful, tasty food elegantly served at reasonable prices. But a friend and I had a real problem there: we both got really vicious food poisoning. It just couldn't have come from any other source, unfortunately. I mean, this was spectacular, hours shouting ralph! into the big white telephone. Medical intervention. Both of us felt like we were going to die, so this was in the chicken or the pork. I phoned them. I emailed them. I was polite and didn't ask for anything. Zero acknowledgement, nada. Everyone makes mistakes, but these folks should be more interested in the health of their clientele than they apparently are. I don't care how great they are, I think you go there, you take your life in your hands more

Really hands down the best Chinese food I've had in awhile- and I grew up in Taiwan! 10/18/2007

I went there for the first time today for lunch. Like the other reviews- the decor is nothing astounding- but it is very pleasant and comfortable. THe service is friendly and efficient- and th FOOD!! Wow! I highly recommend the crispy fish. It comes in fried pieces on a bed of chinese greens. All their food is phenomenal and really pretty to look at. It's a little pricey- but really- the lunch menu wasn't any more than the average restaurant in Pasadena. (Barring the fast food places....) Go! Pros: The food is first rate-good wine list too Cons: None that I can think of more

Just keeps getting better. A classic. 5/14/2007

I have taken many clients here to dine, and they all rave. Not bad for my business or Yujean Kang's! Pros: Outstanding Gourmet Chinese Food. Cons: A bit pricey, but worth it. This is not ""take-out"" Chinese. more

Delicious 9/17/2006

Being chinese, I was skeptical about visiting Yujean but it has such good ratings. I also allow myself to be open and not criticize where the origin of the food should be but rather focus on taste and quality. Living in Los Angeles, food has its share of the diverse influence it resides, it is very hard to know what is authentic or traditional anymore. The food at Yujean was absolutley delicious. We ordered the eggplant with shaved bonito which was stir fried in such high heat that the outside became crispy yet inside was soft and smooth. We also ordered the dim sum sampler which I do not recommend. The meal comes with rice which I wished they used a better quality. It also comes with napa cabbage salad which was very good to start the meal. Pros: Food Cons: Quality of rice more

POOR SERVICE 8/8/2006

I love Yujean's Kang's food. Eventhough the decor of the restaurant is just average, at least the price is fair. I took my parents there on a monday night. It was the worst experience I ever had at Yujean kang's. There was no host to greet guests or answer the phone. We waited at least 10 minutes for someone even came to greet us. The restaurant was full but no server in the dinning room. Finally we saw one lady in the dinning room, I guess she's the manager because she wasn't wearing any uniform, but there is no way to get her attention. It took us three hours to finish our dinner because of the waiting. Our waiter even forgot our dumpling. The restaurant was recently remodeled. The price has increased at least $3 for each item on the menu but there is no service left. I rather have average decor than expensive menu items and poor service. With a manager on floor, I certainly expect more from the service. more

Great Lunch 5/17/2006

Brought 5 of my colleagues for lunch, and we all had a great experience! Food was excellent! Thank you.. Pros: Food, Service more

Flavorful chinese food served graciously 4/10/2006

This is a great place to go if you want flavorful Chinese food. My parents do NOT eat Chinese food because they don't like the flavors anywhere else, but they will eat here over and over again. Some good dishes to try: marinated pressed tofu with chili oil, vegetarian chow mein, and spicy sauteed green beans. The prices are fair and the service is wonderful. We were there on a busy Friday night and were attended to constantly. I will definitely go back here...good food, good value, good service. Pros: Flavorful food, Attentive service, Fair prices Cons: Parking more

Good but not out of this world... 12/9/2005

A Chinese American, I have dined at Yugean's for upwards of 10 yrs. The food is stylized-Chinese with some very fine flavors. We always eat the tea-smoked duck AKA duck burritos. Eggplant is also excellent and spicy. We pass on desserts which are an odd take on modern fusion (?) but don't hit the gong. The bigger downside besides the prices is the service. Our last few visits have been marred by lackadasical or slightly incompetent service. This was not the case years ago. It was sufficiently bad that we brought this up with Yugean on last visit; he said the waitress was new...The service is not up to the food, which is a touch short considering the price. They have a large wine list, but we always drink beer which is what the Chinese would do. Pros: interesting food Cons: prices, small portions, service more

another winner.... 4/26/2005

on raymond! i had been putting off trying this restaurant because i was skeptical. i didn't think it would be an authentic asian restaurant but to my surprise, it was fantastic. the portions were generous and the mini dumplings in chili sauce (appetizer) were so cute and had a great flavor. when this place says prawns, they mean prawns- not the sad, defrosted looking shrimp you find most places. i definitely want to go back because there were many more things i wanted to try. the ONLY bad thing about our experience was that my husband paid (i think) 7.50 or so for tsing tao beer!! not worth it - c'mon it's not THAT good :) Pros: inexpensive, attentive service more

Perfect! 4/11/2005

I love this restaurant. It took me years to get there because I am a cheap eats person and the $$ made me think this is too expensive but it's NOT! The service is absolutely amazing; its a show in itself!!! The food fantastic! The prices are reasonable. There is no reason not to go; except if you don't like Chinese food. Reservations are strongly recommended but if you did what I did, you can walk in off the street, make a reservation and go to Nonya for cocktails while you wait. Pros: Super service, Fantistic food, Amazing atmosphere more

Worth a try, but not a regular 3/25/2005

I enjoyed my experience at Yujean Kang's, but probably won't be frequenting it on a regular basis. The staff was wonderful, attentive, and friendly. The food was beautifully presented, but not really worth the inflated price of ""gourmet"". Cons: Limited parking more

The food is soooo good 3/16/2005

I am chinese and I love this restaurant. The food is very tasty and creative. Prices are good. Pros: great food, creative Cons: slow service more

disappointed 2/13/2005

I have typically had very good experiences with restraunts that citysearch users rate highly--- but this time, I was severely disappointed. We waited a full five minutes before anyone even greeted us, and then the hostess was not particularly accommadating about giving us the table that we preferred. Although we found out later that she was a new waitress in training, the first server that came to take our drink and appetizer order FORGOT the lettuce cups that we ordered. The wine list was pricey-- the cheapest wine was $38, not really leaving any options for people that are trying to eat on a budget. The crispy spicy beef was dull, uninspired and overly salty. I had high expectations, and the entire experience was very disappointing. more

Yujean Kang's Gourmet 5/14/2004

I first visited Yujean's in 1988 when it was written up in Gourmet as one of the top 10 new restaurants in the U.S. It was an experience I'll never forget even though I've returned almost every week since. It's the most wonderful food on the planet- from old favorites like crispy beef or tea smoked duck (warning these are addicting, movie stars have them flown in when on location)to any new dish he makes- I love them all! I brought my goddaughter when she was 15b and this week she is having her wedding dinner there. The lunch is the beast deal in Los Angeles-3 courses plus cookies for under 10.00. Any time you go you'll find it is just the BEST. Yujean also is a wine pairing expert- enjoy! Pros: amazing flavors, fabulous wines, terrific value more

Best Chinese Cuisine 12/20/2003

This spot just off the Old Town Pasadena shopping strip is perfect for great quality food for a reasonable price and wonderful service. It's difficult to find all of these traits in a restaurant these days. I highly recommend it for a romantic dinner for two, or a family dinner with the kids. It's for everyone. We've been going there for years now and will continue to do so. Just remember to get the Mandarin Orange Cheese Cake after your meal(s). This is a perfect ending to a perfect dinner. more

yummy to the tummy 12/29/2002

The food is always good especially the sauteed Blue Lake green beans. This is not the Sunday night Chinese restaurant you used to go to with your mom and dad, this restaurant is a more like a bistro. The service is extremely professional and curteous. Pros: service, mandarin orang chsck Cons: parking more

Best Chinese Food Ever 9/24/2002

Definately the best chinese food I have ever had. The crispy beef was awesome. I felt bad that my family couldn't finish dinner, it was so good I didn't want to leave any leftovers. Recently tried to go back and they were remodeling and weren't open. But as soon as they open up I am there. more

The best of two worlds. 8/26/2002

The chef at Yujean Kang understands traditional Chinese cooking (go hang out in Monterey Park if you want the best traditional Chinese food in the US) but brings his own creativity to the mix. Every dish carefully prepared and presented. more

Come w/ an empty stomach 7/30/2002
