Not Recommended 8/24/2009

I could not agree more with the first review. After studying for years with a topnotch (and very hard) teacher in Eugene, Oregon I took a couple of classes at Yoga Shack and was appalled by the arrogance and elitism I found at yoga shack. I have heard this kind of feedback from many people that I have encountered who took classes at Yoga Shack. The instructors were not at all encouraging and seemed to thrive off of knowing (or thinking) that they were better than us and were actually irritated at the prospect of having to help individuals in their poses. Under no circumstances would I recommend this studio for those who wish to learn and practice yoga. Pros: None Cons: Read below more

Best Yoga Workout in Reno 5/20/2008

If you are looking for a really challenging workout, have an open mind when the word "yoga" is used, and want to be pushed to your limit, then Ashtanga Yoga is just what you are looking for. There is only one Ashtanga Yoga studio in Reno and that is the Yoga Shack. A lot of people say they have had a bad experience at the studio because they don't think that this is what yoga is about. I just really like Ashtanga. Having practiced a few times with Sri K Patabi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga, I found the Yoga Shack to be pretty authentic. Patabi Jois is unrelenting and you are not allowed to make modifications to the given set of poses. Most people are not seeking this type of yoga. They want soft, slow and gentle and I can understand that. The Yoga Shack offers Mysore classes which are the traditional Ashtanga Practice (named after the city in India) with either some or no instruction offered. Beginner classes help to lay the foundation for the Mysore classes and focus on proper alignment and breathing. Lynne is the owner, has the most experience and she is the most demanding teacher at the studio. If you are training to visit India or work with Patabi Jois, his grandson, or long-time student/teachers take her classes. I have practiced yoga for more than 8 years and have completed a 200 hour teacher certification. I have taught Ashtanga and Power Yoga for almost 3 years and also enjoy taking as many workshops along the west coast with different teachers as I can fit into my schedule. From my experience and preferences, I would recommend the classes at the Yoga Shack to those who are looking for a challenge. Who knows you may even enjoy yourself. Pros: Authentic Ashtanga, good informational website, helpful staff Cons: None - working hard is good more

Worst yoga class I've ever taken 1/14/2008

My husband, daughter and I took Lynn Ramsey's class and it was a terrible experience. We have all been practicing for several years and taken many different classes and instructors. Upon entering the studio, we were told that we were not to take a child's pose or rest during class. Lynn spent most of the class speaking in a loud voice and adjusting us roughly. She belittled us and at one point told us we belonged in a beginner class. It's a good thing that we all know our bodies because I would not let her adjust me into poses that I'm not comfortable with. She never asked about any injuries and we never signed a waiver. I feel badly that people attend this studio and think that this is yoga! Apparently she has quite a reputation because at the next place we tried, everyone had the same opinion. Pros: nice space Cons: unaccepting, critical teaching style; rough, unsafe adjustments without permission more
