Walter's Hot Dog Stand

Walter's hot dogs are somewhat legendary in these parts. The stand serves a delicious grilled hot dog and has been doing so since 1919. You'll know you've arrived at Walter's by the long line of eager, hungry folks lined up outside its windows. Park on the street, if you're lucky enough to find a space and be prepared to eat at one of the outdoor picnic tables beside the stand or take it back to your car. The hot dogs are split open, then grilled and served in a toasted bun. Accompanied by it's own brand of mustard--a tangy blend of mustard with pickle, these dogs need nothing else. Get a side of fries, a cold drink or milk shake, and you'll be quite happy. Kids of all ages come to Walters and there is a postcard wall of folks who've sent back greetings from virtually every corner of the world. It's a family kind of stand and one worth visiting if you're ever near Mamaroneck, NY (about 15 minutes from White Plains). more

Funky old place. Long lines for buttery grilled split dogs with their own special mustard - no other toppings are available. The real attraction for me is the roadside kitsch Chinese pagoda built in 1928. The dogs are highly rated but I don't get what the big deal is. They're good but I wouldn't go out of the way for them. The fries are more notable, I think. It is a pleasant experience if you're down that way, though. The crowds always seem excited and the outdoor picnic grove is very pleasant on a summer day. more
