Best

A destination worth seeking out. Don't make solid plans for after because there's usually a wait. Prices keep going up but I'm still paying. Totally unique sauce and sides (try th...

Worst

The meat itself is fine, even if the ribs are undercooked. The sauce is Hawaiian, for heaven's sake. And it's sweet. And there's room for hundreds of people. This is not a bar...

Overrated 12/2/2002

Overrated, the prices were high, the barbeque was good not excellent. Pros: chicken Cons: brisket more

Pure Texian 11/27/2002

Unadulterated Texan food, honesty and tradition. Dont bring your plastic cause it won't work here. Just bring plenty of dirty cash and a big appetite. You won't be sorry. Maybe you'll get lucky and be able to catch a local cowboy strummin in the courtyard! Review compliments of 1HapeTexn!! more

Fun drive, great for visitors, great BBQ 11/18/2002

Don't mind the 30 minute drive from Austin as it is GREAT to take visitors to. Went at 8 PM on a Saturday night and were seating within 5 minutes. Fun atmosphere, great sausage and potato salad. Ribs to die for. Blackberry cobbler a must! more

Austins Best BBQ 11/11/2002

I first ate out at the now famous Salt Lick Barbeque back in 1973. It was then and is still, the best barbeque I have ever eaten. Back then, I didn't know whether it was the long night before at the Armadillo World Headquarters, and my enormous case of the munchies, or if the barbeque was really that good. Well, I can say now after slowing down a bit and sampling barbeque all over my native Texas that the Salt Lick is by far the most consistent, (after nearly 30 years)and most delicious barbeque in Texas. Pros: pretty drive there, plenty of parking, relaxed atmosphere Cons: no in-town delivery, no beer on tap more

Truly Texan 10/26/2002

The food was delicious and plentiful. As long as you can eat, they keep the food coming!!! Great for the larger appetites!! more

over rated 10/26/2002

over rated, too long away for bbq, there are great bbq places in Austin Pros: good food Cons: crowed, expensive, long away more

Best Ever 10/25/2002

I live in Alaska while my family lives in Dallas. Every time I come back to see them, I'll drive to Austin with friends just so that we can spend the next few hours at the Salt Lick. It is hands down the best barbeque on the face of the planet. Great atmosphere and location make this my favorite resteraunt of all time. Pros: BYOB more

Awesome BBQ 10/14/2002

Incredible food, family or group atmosphere, just don't forget its BYOB!! more

Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere 10/3/2002

Some people LOVE the food. However, for Texas BBQ, I think it is only ""okay."" (Their cobblers are wonderful though.) I go to Salt Lick for the Texas-charm atmosphere. Sitting outdoors, among the trees, sipping ""what U brung,"" and listening to live music while you wait for your table. That is what Salt Lick is all about. Pros: Ambience, Location, BYOB Cons: Location, Sauce, Sides more

dry as dirt 9/23/2002

service: substandard food: dry and gristly everybody else's rating: way overrated more

ok 9/19/2002

The meat is pretty good, but the sides served are mediocre at best more

the best bbq drive in texas. 9/14/2002

i have lived in texas for 40 years and thought i have had the best bbq in the texas panhandle until i moved to austin!!!!!way to go salt-lick!! Pros: best tasting ribs, best tasting sauce, very nice drive Cons: don't go sat. p.m. more

Another plate, please 8/28/2002

Salt Lick combines the best of the food, environment, and Texas. The mustard-based bbq sauce is a welcome change. The endless plates of sausage, brisket, and ribs are phenomenol. BYOB is a nice touch. Cash only is a pain in the.... Pros: All you can eat, BYOB Cons: Cash only more

Just ok . . 8/28/2002

The actual barbeque is really good, but the sides leave a lot to be desired. Sure its fun to bring your own cooler of whatever you want to drink, but if you aren't going to serve me alcohol at least give me better choices in side dishes. more

Simply the best. 8/28/2002

Salt Lick is the best BBQ in the Austin area. It's delicious, plentiful, inexpensive and you can bring your own beer. What more do I need to say? Pros: Outstanding value., Large portions., Plenty of parking. Cons: Crowded., No alcohol sales., Hot in the summer. more

Outstanding ribs 8/22/2002

Incredible ribs, wonderful country atmosphere, laid back and comfortable - best barbecue in the world! more

Haven for Out of Towners 8/20/2002

Ok, I'll give you that the food is good, but seriously the prices for a plate of BBQ? Nice enough place, but it kinda epitomizes Austin, too much hype about how much of an ""in"" place that it is. Pros: Nostalgia, Good food, Nice people Cons: Crowded, Distance, Expensive more

finger lickin' good 8/17/2002

Awesome pork ribs-- lean, smokey, and best of all, all you can eat! The sauce is nice in that it is understated and does not overpower the incredible flavor of the meat. Leland (the manager) is the man!!! Pros: Beautiful scenery, Family style, BYOB Cons: Crowded on weekends more

The cobbler alone is worth it 8/16/2002

If you need to plan an event - go for an event at their pavilion. It's great for holiday parties, receptions and stuff. Not only do you get a great facility, but incredible food. And my title says it all - the cobbler is to die for - peach or blackberry - shoot, you get one, have a friend get the other and switch half way thru... more

Now This is BBQ 8/14/2002

Well worth the drive and the wait; However, don't forget to bring cash because they don't accept credit cards and the nearest ATM is in another zip code! Their BBQ sauce is awesome! Also save a little room for desert because the blackberry cobbler is execellent. Pros: BYOB, BBQ Sauce Rocks, BlackBerry Cobbler Cons: CASH ONLY!, Way out in Driftwood, generally crowded more
