A destination worth seeking out. Don't make solid plans for after because there's usually a wait. Prices keep going up but I'm still paying. Totally unique sauce and sides (try th...

The meat itself is fine, even if the ribs are undercooked. The sauce is Hawaiian, for heaven's sake. And it's sweet. And there's room for hundreds of people. This is not a bar...

Dining Escape 7/23/2002

We usually end up at the Salt Lick once a month or so. It's a great place to take a large group of people -- the menu's easy (no need for calculators when figuring out individual tabs), and the atmosphere always encourages a great time. We recently went to the Salt Lick for Father's Day and the food was great as usual, but the ribs and brisket were even better than usual. My husband's convinced that they got a new head cook in the kitchen, because the brisket was especially moist and tender. Their water used to be pretty bad because it was well water, but we think they got a filter because it was actually drinkable this last time, so I won't recommend bringing bottled water like I used to. Pros: Great BBQ, Rustic atmosphere, Beautiful drive Cons: Quite a drive, Can be crowded more

The Real Thang! 7/23/2002

Salt Lick - clearly the leader in BBQ. Great BBQ and a real central Texas cultural experience. Bring friends, family, and a cooler full of iced Shiner Blonde. Does it really get any better? more

Ahead on the Sides 7/23/2002

Austin is FULL of great barbecue, all pretty much comparable on the meats, as far as I'm concerend. It may seem odd to pick a BBQ joint based on the sides, but there you go. The meats and the sauce are fantastic, but it's the vinegar-sesame slaw, the potato salad, the bread and the cobbler that keep me coming back. Pros: delicious, abundant, must-see Cons: BYOB, often crowded, it's a hike more

Meets the hype! 7/23/2002

Salt Lick is divine! Worth the drive -- remember to bring cash (no checks or credit cards) and your own beer! The pork ribs are fabulous ... more

the best BBQ this side of the Rio Grande 7/4/2002

I grew up in Austin, and have been a huge fan of The Salt Lick since I was about 8. I live in New Hampshire now, and make it a point to stop in there at least once when I visit home. When I'm not in Texas, I always have their sauce and dry rub on hand. How? you may ask. Well caheck out their wwebsite. I buy the sauce by the case and they get it to me quickly. I'll be back in August and will definitely take the family there, once again. I can't wait. They also let you take the leftovers, from the ""all you can eat"", home with you. Pros: Laid Back Atmosphere, sausage/brisket/ribs, Peach Cobbler Cons: Dry county more

Salk Lick BBQ #1 6/16/2002

This has to be the BEST BBQ, I've ever had! Tex-Mex BBQ to its best! If you go there you have to try the ribs, and the all you can eat meats! Yum yum yum! But, out og everything you have to LOVE the ""famous"" BBQ Sauce. The best ever! If you are a chef or like grilling from time to time you have to by some there. The atmosphere is great with live music, and great waiting places. But, the atmosphere inside is even better with ""log"" tables and and friendly service. You have to go there! Pros: BBQ Sauce, Ribs, Overall Expierence Cons: Slow service, Too many people there more

Not worth the drive 5/28/2002

All the talk and the Salt Lick did not live up to its reputation around the office. I drove more than 30 miles to try it out, what a mistake. I would rather have burned the money in my back yard and would have gotten more satisifaction. Food wasn't the great, small poritions, rude waitress, cold food, cost too much for what you get. Pros: Dont have to go back Cons: Food, Cost, Employees more

ahhh the memories.... 5/23/2002

of Saltlick. There's nothing quite like all-you-can-eat BBQ and sides with a keg of beer that YOU brought. Desserts to die for as well. If you've never been to The Salt Lick, you must go. This place is perfect for large groups looking for a casual atmosphere. more

the best sauce 5/21/2002

The Salt Lick has the best bbq sauce in town. It's different from tomato-y sauces found elsewhere. It has more of a smokey flavor. For me, the drive is worth it just to bring home a few bottles. Don't forget - CASH only and BYOB! more

Good tradition 5/21/2002

I like the country drive to Salt Lick the most. The food is not the thing of legends, but it's not disappointing. The brisket and ribs are my favorites, although the sausage is pretty good too. The sauce is good, but I've had better. That's why I'm not giving super high marks here. I'd rather save the gas and time and go in town. Pros: food, atmosphere Cons: drive more

the best 5/21/2002

this place is the best. Its the way Austin use to be. Good location.good food and all around hill country flavor. It cannot be beat. Pros: good food, great location, weekend entertainment Cons: gets crowded at times, parking lot needs to, no air condition more

Online delivery 5/20/2002

My boyfriend in San Diego gets very homesick for Austin, so to cheer him up, I ordered pork ribs from the Salt Lick online to be delivered Valentine's Day. That's the best and weirdest V-day present he's ever received. The tangy bbq and the tender ribs really took us back. Thanks, Salt Lick. more

Wonderful Hill Country experience 5/20/2002

One of the best things about going to Salt Lick, can also be the worst -- the lovely, scenic drive. Going out there, it is wonderful. But after several servings of mouth-watering brisket, a few of your own beers that you are allowed (and encouraged) to bring, incredible sides and some local music, the last thing you want to do is drive home. Looking to impress out-of-town guests with a true Austin dining experience, this is it. The people that complain about it don't realize how good they have it says this former Austin resident. Pros: location, brisket Cons: long drive home more
