No-nonsense, delicious Sushi 2/27/2009

Everything about this place is minimalist, but pleasant -- concrete block walls, white-on-white decor. The dishes are the same way -- I've seen more artfully presented sushi in my life, but then I didn't order any of the more exotic items so maybe I missed out. Service was quick and attentive, and the food was delicious, including the "house" sake. The spicy tuna in the roll was chopped a little too finely but that's really my only complaint. Given the no-frills vibe, the prices would seem a bit steep in any other part of town -- but around here, $40 for a nice lunch is par for the course. Pros: Quick, attentive service Cons: A little pricey more

Best Sushi place in LA! 11/22/2008

I had about 15 pieces of Sushi and 2 hand rolls at lunchtime. I got really satisfied and enjoyed them a lot. The Omakase course came with Tuna, Albacore, Scallop with truffle, Crab with miso, stirred Kinmedai(Alfonsino), Toro(fatty tuna), and another chopped Toro, Anago(eel), Baby yellowtail, Beef with garlic, incredible Uni(sea urchin), Ikura(salmon roe) on a stirred Salmon, Aji(moonfish), Saba(mackerel), Crab Hand roll and Toro with green onion Hand roll, served one by one on the small plate. Every sushi looks very beautiful. Most are already seasoned with some kind of their special sauce or salt, so you don?t need soy sauce so much. Their special salt and sauce make their sushi unbelievable tasty and bring up the flavor of raw-fishes. Don't forget SAKE imported from Japan. The Sake goes with Sushi and those combinations make you excited! more

Quality and Fresh Sushi in Bamboo trees. 9/20/2008

I have visited many traditional sushi restaurants in Tsukiji district of Tokyo for last ten years and it is one of my top enjoyments I am fortunate to have in my life. I found Sushi KiraLA in Bevery Hills to be equal in taste and quality compared to those in Tokyo. It is very hard to find a trained sushi chef in LA area but KiraLA has now one of those rare talents. Bamboo trees outside are real and so refreshing. Many menu are seasonal and also called OMAKASE meaning you will be served a bunch of sushi specially and daily selected by Sushi chef, because as you know sushi is made of fish and they are different everyday in freshness and seasonarity. KiraLA has a wide range of menu for those who need the freshness in time. KiraLA also serves economical lunch and dinner set menu, too. If you are one of those who like quiet setting, KiralA is open throughout afternoon, and you are never under pressure to enjoy your late lunch. Pros: Fresh, Variety, Seasonal Menu, Friendly small setting. Cons: Busy during peak hours. more

Overated 11/13/2007

They are one of those overpriced for un-spectacular sushi restauran. Overated and nothing special. Average presentation, unprofessional average service. Can you trust their quality if they have different sushi chef every time you go there? Fresher , better and cheaper fish can be found elsewhere such as Yu-N-Mi. Pros: Quiet Cons: Overpriced average food more

Good, too expensive 11/3/2007

I love sushi. Not just americanized super rolls, but actually sushi. Sasabune, Nozawa, Hamasaku, have some pretty fresh fish and they do sushi well. Sushi Dokoro also has very good fish but is just missing something. The decor is forgettable and the prices are way too high (blame the beverly hills rent). For two people our bill came to $155 (with tip). And we didn't even gorge ourselves. I was personally still hungry. Service was excellent, food was good to very good, but the price just wasn't worth it. If you LOVE sushi then try it out, you might like it. I just think there are too many other great sushi spots. Pros: Valet, Service Cons: Price more

First Tier LA Sushi Bar 5/30/2007

Dokoro is on par with other first tier sushi bars in LA sush as The H*mp, Sasabune, Nozawa, Mori and Nishimura. Their sweet shrimp will still be moving when served, ala "odori" style. They also feature some of the best Spanish mackerel and o toro in the city. The sushi chefs have Tsukijii connections which explains the ultra fresh selections. A pleasant surprise is the comfortable and warm atmosphere for a place with a Beverly Hills address. Dokoro is not just for sushi snobs. You can get a California roll here and with a smile! If you truly covet top end sushi, you cannot go wrong with a visit to Dokoro. Pros: Freshest sweet shrimp in LA; Spanich mackerel; O toro Cons: Pricey more

Pure, unadorned sushi 9/4/2006

The quality of the fish selection and the level of execution of each dish reflect what true Japanese cuisine is all about. The enormous amaebi nigiri-- all others served in neighboring restaurants appear synthetic by comparison-- is simply divine with a dusting of gold! You will not believe the size of the amaebi served at this restaurant. Our Carte Blanche meal also included Matsutake mushrooms flown in from Japan, which were sliced and expertly grilled, and the accompanying Daikon radish and Ponzu sauce made this an impeccable dish. Another outstanding course was the ankimo. Im usually not a fan of this anywhere else, but the ankimo served at Sushi Dokoro Ki Ra La had no remnants of that fishy scent that often accommodates fish liver. All in all, this is a fantastic restaurant that will definitely gather a cult following. One piece of advice, this restaurant is not for those looking for a cheap Japanese meal, sashimi this fresh requires a little more than what you pay for at Whole Foods for a plastic container of dingy reddish tuna nigiribe prepared! Pros: Fresh, high quality fish more

One of the best in Los Angeles~ 8/14/2006

recently, visited sushi dokoro ki ra la in bev hills with fellow workers from icm and dined on their omakase course...oh what a new find. been to nishimura, mori and sasabune but this place is outstanding. first of all the freshest fish, try their live sweet shrimp!!, second the atmoshpere and third the customer care and overall charm of the restaurant. the above mentioned rest. are all great, but it lacks service and charm. its like ur just a number in a factory or something. esp. sasabune. sometimes these other places forget who is paying the bill!. compared to the others, this place also has the classics like the spicy tuna, yakitori chicken, tempura, calif.. etc. for the non raw fish eaters. oh yeah, and they dont look down on anyone, just because they dont know you or your wife hates raw fish~~my wife doesnt eat raw fish, so this place is absolutely perfect for those 'once in a blue moon' dates when my kids are asleep. she' s hooked on the simple fact that they serve champagne (40 bucks for a bottle of nv lp!? almost as cheap as ralphs) this place is just a gem! get to know yoshi and he'll def. steer you in the right direction. for all you people who are price sensitive....like yoshi says, you get what you pay for, there is a reason cheaper restaurants cover their sushi with all that sauce!! this place knows the right people weather its the fish monger, uni monger? or the chefs (michisan) the toro from japan is like butter!! go early though, because since the food cost of such delicacies is so high and to avoid wasted food, they might run out for the night, but dont worry they are open seven days a week~~ reserv and enjoy more
