Scovill Zoo

When I considered going to Scovill Children's Zoo, I was afraid that it wouldn't measure up to the memories that I had of it, which were 30 years old! I needn't have worried. It was all it had used to be, and more! They still have exotic animals, and the macaw. They have a petting zoo, that is greatly expanded, and they still have the train. They also have a great wooden maze, climbing thing in the front that will amuse even tired, cranky kids on a hot day! Maybe I'll make it an annual tradition to go. more

I give Scovill Zoo in Decatur IL, 4 thumbs up. Compared to other zoos of smaller size, it is an excellent choice. There is a good variety of animal species to view and interact with, beautiful grounds to walk through, and several amusing attractions for the kids. The smaller size of the property is perfect for younger kids. My 3 year old had enough to do to keep her entertained for the afternoon, but it wasn't to the extent of overwhelming her. Very, very reasonably priced; much cheaper than the larger zoos. more

My children and I really enjoy spending a morning at Scovill's Zoo. The zoo is not very large so all of the animals can easily be visited in a couple of hours. There is quite a variety of fun animals, some of our favorites are the cheetahs, camels (a baby was just born this summer), goats, and monkeys. My personal favorite is the outdoor exhibit of wild guinea pigs. They're very fun to watch. We enjoy playing in the petting zoo as well as riding the train. There is an additional charge for the carousel and the train. We purchased zoo keys earlier this summer and that keeps the boys interested in moving from one exhibit to another... we get lots of good exercise at the zoo. One of my favorite parts about Scovill Zoo is that you see the zookeeper around the zoo on a regular basis and they're happy to answer any questions you might have about the zoo. The park in front of the zoo is also a lot of fun. It's a very large wooden play area with lots of activities built right in. The boys LOVE to play on this but BEWARE of the splinters! more
