Do yourself a favor 9/20/2010

The 1812 Overture of Indian food. Indian restaurants in Hicksville open and close in no time. Rangmahal has been around for over 15 years. There are many reasons. Arun and Pooja own and run it. He in the kitchen and she in the front of the house. Trust Pooja to recommend the right dishes to fit your taste and bet your bottom dollar that Arun will deliver magic. Don't be afraid. Everything is not incendiary. The food will introduce you to a rainbow of tastes that will will thrill you. Crab cakes in an Indian restaurant? Yes! and absolutely delicious. I've eaten in Indian restaurants around the world. Rangmahal is as good as it gets. more

Waste of money 3/6/2010

My husband and I decided to try out this restaurant due to all the good reviews we had read. We had also seen the online menu (which included prices) before hand, and the dishes seemed appetizing and the prices seemed reasonable.\r As soon as we walked in, we were surprised to see that there was only one other couple eating at the restaurant at the time (this was not a good sign). Also, the atmosphere was very dark and dingy, and not appealing at all. When me and my husband opened the menu, the prices were much higher than those posted online. I felt deceived, because they should update their online prices if there is such a marked difference. It is unfair to bring in customers based on posting cheaper prices online, and then actually have much more expensive prices on the actual menu in the restaurant. I felt like leaving at this point because I had been cheated, but my husband wanted to try out the place due to the great reviews.\r When we got the food, the portions were very small, and the food did not taste like typical North Indian food. Also, just one glass of coke cost over 3 bucks, which is just a joke! There is only one waitress (because that is all that is needed at this place!) and she happens to be the owner's wife, so I wish we didn't even tip her, because they are making a huge profit off of us already! We spent a lot of money, and definitely did not get our money's worth. We will never go back to this place, and now I clearly see why this place stays so empty. Pros: Location Cons: Very high prices, Small portion size, OK tasting food more

Amazing 3/15/2009

This restaurant has amazing, fresh food. All of the curries are made with fresh chillies, and the food is simply delicious. Pros: Best place in LI Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

One of the Best Places for Authentic Indian food 3/15/2009

Food is fresh and cooked by the owner himself. Many different types of curries and some special types not offered elsewhere. Also, many desserts and special breads. Pros: Great Food Cons: Watchful of the spiciness you request. more

Best Indian Food 3/10/2009

Rangmahal is delicious. As previous guest have written I've eaten Indian food in various parts of the US and in South Africa. By far Rangmahal is the best. Each time I visit Long Island my friends now where I want to eat. The food is well prepared and is worth the $$$$$$. Next winter I plan on taking the cook up on his offer to ship food to me in North Carolina. I don't know about other restaurants in Long Island, but I have no need to try the rest, when I found the best. \r \r BTW: the chilli chicken is delicious. If you like your nose to run while eating ask for 9. The food will be hot, but stil enjoyable. Pros: The food has great taste more

Best Indian Food on Long Island! 3/7/2009

I love Indian food and have eat at Indian restaurants in several countries. Arguably, my meal was one of the best I have ever had. The portions are generous and I ended up taking some home, which I spread out over two meals. Very yummy and I highly recommend! Pros: Personalized service; loved that they tailored the spicyness of the food to my preference. Cons: None. more

Try House of Dosa, Ignore recent reviews 1/18/2009

Ignore the recent reviews, this place has gone downhill and when I say downhill, I say avalanche. \r This used to be a hot restaurant, especially 10 years ago with the lunch buffet.\r \r Unfortunately now a days the food is so so and the prices extremely out of line. Expect to pay 50 dollars for lunch, with the menu prices inaccurate. The waiters will req. the most expensive dishes.\r \r I warn you to ignore past reviews, this has gotten really bad for the past 2 years. Same with Kiran Palace, though they seemed to change management. Go with HOUSE OF DOSA Pros: None, Better ambience than normal indian restaurents Cons: Terrible food, terrible prices, the place has no people in it ever more

MY NEW FAVORITE INDIAN RESTAURANT!!! 1/7/2009

I set out one day in search of some outstanding Indian food and can't believe I found it. As I drove up and down Broadway in Hicksville, passing one Indian restaurant after another, one kept catching my eye. In large bold letters it read ""Best Indian Food on Long Island"". I thought to myself: ""thats a mightly big claim, I think I'll give it a try"". Im so pleased I did! I think my stomach started growling as soon I opened the door. The delicious aroma of Indian spice instantly make your mouth water.\r Owners Arun & Puja tend to their customers personally. While Puja is serving up the best Mango Lassi I ever had and taking your order, her husband Arun is busy in the kitchen. The staff is attentive and friendly, the atmosphere warm and inviting.\r The Chicken tika masala is mouthwatering in its buttery curry sauce that is hard to stop eating, the spinach paneer is delectable and so are the numerous naans and appetizers. Watch out for the vegatble samosas...they are really big! The portions are hearty so if your a party of two you will most likely take food home. The desserts are decadent and they have lots of variety as well as the more traditional Indian desserts. Their signature rose flavored rice pudding is heavenly. \r Come to think of it, some of my favorite restaurants were always the ones where you were made to feel like a friend. Arun & Puja are warm and wonderful hosts. They will do what it takes to make sure you are satisfied. I have no complaints except one: I have to find a place in my fridge to HIDE the leftovers!\r Visit Rangmahal soon!!! Pros: I dont have to hike into Manhatten more

So dissapointed 12/28/2008

So dissapointed with my experience here. I've had better indian food for a lot less. The food is overpriced and on top of that they charge more than the menu price. They participate in the restaurant com but will not honor the gift certificates making up the or own reasons not stated on the ceritifcate. Cons: Overpriced, charge more than menu price more

Incredible Food, Perfect Service. 10/13/2008

My family took me here for my Birthday. We enjoyed the best Indian food we've ever tasted accompanied\r by attentive service. A worldwide traveler who joined us stated it was some of the best ""hand-crafted"" Indian \r food he had ever tasted. Every detail was done right. Highly recommended. Pros: Service and food more

Fabulous Indian food. 10/12/2008

Six of us - two from Westchester Co, NY, two from Montclair, NJ where some of the best restaurants, including Indian, are to be had, and our parents who live a town away from Rangmahal, met to celebrate a special family birthday. This was our 1st, 2nd and 3rd time respectively and Rangmahal never disappoints. The service always feels as if we are welcome guests in someone's home; it is that hospitable. Puja suggests delicious dishes from among the very wide-ranging menu and the flavors are complex and pleasing. We usually end up ordering more than we can eat as the dishes are so plentiful and the selection so enticing. But that way we get to enjoy our meals the next day, too, which makes the somewhat upscale prices more affordable. It is worth every penny but this is not a bargain, Indian buffet. Arun told us a wonderful story about their wedding celebrations in India. The rest of the staff were also very attentive and nice people as well and we never felt rushed although we stayed quite a long time eating and talking and enjoying ourselves. We were surprised by a complimentary birthday dessert (I cannot promise this is standard) and we all felt relaxed and very satisfied - by food, mood, service, atmosphere and the whole experience. Rangmahal is a very special restaurant run by a very special couple. P.S.: Dynamite cocktails; try the ginger martini with fresh juliennes of ginger. Pros: ambience, service, food Cons: lighting a bit dark more

Best Indian Food 10/6/2008

A wonderful dining experience! Delicious food & warm, friendly service. 10/1/2008

We have lived on Long Island (in the Hicksville area) for years. The neighborhood is full of restaurants, but there are a choice few that stand out brilliantly, and Rangmahal is one. Patrons are greeted with a warm smile from Puja (your hostess), and the mood for a lovely evening or afternoon dining experience is set. On many occasions we have enjoyed the specials recommended by Chef Arun (and you can NEVER go wrong with his suggestions), but tonight we felt like trying a few basic and traditional dishes - a simple Chicken Korma and a Palak Paneer. They reminded me just how special Rangmahal really is, as both dishes were exceptional ... and we have eaten at many Indian restaurants around the country (and in Canada!). Another great point is that the staff truly makes you feel welcome. Your preferences are always asked for, and suggestions are always made with a smile but without pressure. We usually go for them, and we've never regretted it. The authentic Indian beverages (lassis, coffees and Chai teas) are also a nice way to complement any meal here. When you are in the Hicksville area, stop in for a fine dining experience at Rangmahal. And rest assured, after your first visit, you'll be perfectly willing to travel to come here from just about anywhere on the Island. more

Shouldn't miss this place! 10/1/2008

We travel along way for good food and Rangmahal is right around the corner... For us it is really a no brain er. The atmosphere along with it's proprietors are warm and welcoming. The meals are done to perfection. The flavors are clean and yet warm and well rounded. If you are new to Indian food or you just don't know what to order, talk to the lovely ladies who take your order. They will advise you in a direction that is most appropriate for your palate. Their mango Lassis are one of the best around. If you can, try to have desert with either the Chai tea or Indian coffee. You will not be disappointed. Pros: Excellent Food, Great Service Cons: None that I can think of. more

top tri state indian 9/27/2008

i've never written an online review before, but after visiting arun and puja's ""rangmahal"" i couldn't resist. i've eaten at some of the best indian restaurants in manhattan, london, san francisco and los angeles, and rangmahal ranks as one of the best. the atmosphere may not be as sophisticated, but you cannot feel more welcome anywhere. arun and puja's son recommended a ginger martini to start things off. if was fantastic. then puja came over and told us the specials. we put ourselves in her hands and were glad we did. no samosa's or chicken tikki masala for us. extraordinary appetizers, fish, panir, and out of this world lamb chops. we finished off the meal with homemade indian ice cream. we will definitely be returning with a crowd. more
