As a previously sucessful owner of a "real" Mexican restaurant & AZ salsa award winner...all I can say is how could they call what we ate a Chimmi? a little mystery meat combined with refried beans...beans do NOT go into Chimmis..filler crap. should've been deep-fried crisp, not soggy...& covered with Enchilada sauce! hello, it's a Chimmi...Chimmi sauce please! Should've been served with a both sour cream & guacamole. Chips were too thick, not fresh-made/deep fried from thin corn tortillas. salsa just o.k. should have 2 kinds hot & not. Asked 4 more salsa to choke down some of the chimmi from 2 people before getting some. Finally..TGFTM (thank God for the Margarita) they are fine & necessary to help swallow. I'm from the Brainerd area, but I have lived in Arizona the last 5 years. Needless to say I was spoiled with authentic Mexican food down there. If you want good Mexican food DO NOT go here. Try out the new EL TEQUILA. The best authentic Mexican food I have found in Central MN. The staff have accents, the decorations are minimal, and it feels like an hour long vacation in Mexico. Great getaway from our -20F weather! more

Ponchos is the best! So the food may not be 100% authentic Mexican, but hey, were in central Minnesota. Never the less, it is still to die for. For starters, the chips and salsa a great! Cant get enough of them. I usually have one of my three favorites; chicken chimmi AKA the "rosa's," chicken fajita sandwich, or steak and chicken sizzling fajitas! No matter which one I choose they all go great with the "southwest ranch." Its killer. Nothing better to compliment the meal then with their seasoned french fries, or garlic mashed potatoes...excellent! Wash it all down with one of their signature margaritas... that right there is a little piece of heaven! more

If you are in Baxter and in the mood for some great Mexican food, then drive right on by Poncho & Lefty’s. I am a huge fan of Mexican food and I was definitely not impressed. They started the meal with chips and salsa – I thought the salsa was okay but the chips were flavorless. The chips looked store bought rather than the homemade looking (and tasting) ones you tend to get at most Mexican restaurants. We ordered Mac & Cheese from the kids menu for my daughter and it looked like runny Kraft Mac & Cheese that I could make better at home. Then when our orders arrived, I was not at all impressed with the flavor. I ordered a combo of an enchilada and a mini-burrito – but I couldn’t tell a difference. The chicken in the filling was pretty stringy and flavorless. I ended up adding some salsa on top to get any flavor in each bite. The highlight of the meal was the mashed potatoes. Those were actually very good – but not worth trying to force down the rest of the meal. I would give the place another chance since my brother did say he really liked it – maybe I just didn’t order their specialty dish. This restaurant can range from EXCELLENT to standard depending on the cook in my opinion. My family eats out at least 10 times per week, and this is one we continually come back to. The food is always hot and fresh, the portions are good sized, and the food is usually good! I usually order the enchiladas, but on my last visit I tried the steak fajita sandwich, and it was EXCELLENT! The steak was so tender, and it melted in my mouth. The chips and salsa was EXCELLENT this day also, it is made fresh at the restaurant, not store bought. The atmosphere is nice for a quiet dinner, or to bring the kids. Oh, and the Strawberry Margaritas, are the BEST! more
