New location, new experience 7/16/2010

I have been going to this restaurant for years and have always come away full and full of praise to heap on the food & the service. That being said, my most recent experience was in stark contrast. I don't know if something changed when they moved to the new location - just across the street from the old one - but it certainly wasn't like any of the my previous visits. This had been a favorite location to take friends and family, especially large groups - and everyone who had gone there once insisted on going back, especially my out-of-town guests. We went to the new venue 2 weeks ago and the best part of the night was that we easily got seating for a party of 12 (we did call ahead). Everything else pretty much went downhill from there. The waiter (who seemed to be in a hurry to do God-knows-what-else) was rude and didn't even take the entire table's appetizer OR drink orders before he snatched the menus away and ran off somewhere else. His excuse was that he thought we just wanted to munch on apps but he never bothered to inquire. We had 5 kids with us and he didn't even bring water for everyone until HALF AN HOUR later! When my cousin's wife took an extra second to ask a question (it was her first time there) before placing her order, he rolled his eyes and gave an attitude. I guess he expected all orders to be ready and complete and couldn't be bothered to answer any questions or give suggestions. Then, after she placed her order, she asked if she could ""upgrade"" to a larger combo and he said he couldn't change it because the order was already in. Have you ever heard of such a thing?!? We didn't ask for anything exotic, just a bigger portion with more/different sides! I guess they were making enough money that night and didn't want to run up larger bills than absolutely needed... When the food finally came - a little bit at a time, at that - we were all ravenous. We were very disappointed because the chicken, which had always been generously portioned, now was mostly skin and fat. Yes, it tasted like it always had but we still felt gypped. The empanadas and ceviche, however, were both good, as was the sangria. The fries, too, were plentiful, hot and tasty. I am really hoping this was just a hiccup and the exception and not the new ""rule"". Since I had always had a good experience, I am willing to give it another shot. If this visit were notwithstanding, I would give this location a solid4 out of 5 stars. Pros: Plenty of seating Cons: Poor service and lowered quality of food more

Great -- food tastes like a home-cooked meal 1/11/2010

Comfortable, kid friendly, not expensive, boisterous and energetic. Great food. Great service. The menu is kind of limited but it's not like you're eating here every day anyway. Overall, it's a great place to stop in for lunch or dinner. They have a patio out back too. Pros: Food, ambience, service Cons: A bit of a hike from my apt more

best moist chicken and price 8/7/2008

this has to be the best chicken i have ever tasted in a while. I found out there's like 50 of these places in the city but we went to the one in jackson heights because susan ate here before and said we should try it. we ordered chicken with some green sauce (YUMMY but a bit spicy) fries , yucca, salad, and sangria. really recommend it. Pros: moist delicious chicken and sangria Cons: loud, busy, limited english waiter more

Good Rotisserie Chicken 5/28/2008

The rotisserie chicken is amazing. The place is always packed but the wait isn't so bad. They only have three main dishes, but it is well worth it. I've been to the one on 34th Street and in the Bronx, this Queens place is biggest out of the three. The price is also very fair.\r more

Beware: Pio Pio Supporting Local Street Thugs!!! 12/28/2007

I have been going to Pio Pio (138st and Cypress, Mott Haven) since it opened a little while back. Its a nice place..good food...and a GREAT addition to the neighborhood. However, when you enter this trendy restaurant, you are greeted by a thug at the door, with the hat turned backwards, 10x too big jeans hanging 2 feet below his waist, gigantic oversized shirt, tattoos, and ridiculously huge Timberlands. It struck me as very odd why they would choose to have this as the first impression, and as the seating host of the restaurant, when everything else is so nice, trendy, etc. \r \r I was GREATLY DISSAPPOINTED AND DISGUSTED to learn why this thug is the one greeting you at the door. Pio Pio is paying off the local street thugs for some absurd reason, and this thug is the ""security"" for the restuarant. Basically they feel the need, for some reason, to have gangmembers running their business...much like the supposed ""protection"" that the mob offered all those years ago. \r \r Not only will I NEVER go there again...I am shocked that they are suporting the local thugs and will be sure to make everyone aware of what is going on. I recommend everyone reading this to not only boycott the chain but to expose the restuarant for supporting/encouraging local street thugs! \r more

I have to ditto all of the posts here. This is truly the ""Gem of Jackson Heights"". I went for the first time 2 weeks ago and returned the next week. It will be a regular for me! The green sauce and that salad.......to die for!!! Pros: Best Chicken, Great prices Cons: Tough Parking more

Rotisserie Chicken with Latino Flavor 11/18/2004

This is one of my favorite places in the city. The menu is simple and the bright decor and latin music are absolutely great. The wait staff is amongst the friendliest in the city. You must have the sangria. Unfortunatey, It can become very busy, so the earlier the better. Pros: Inexpensive more

MAKE RESERVATIONS! 8/9/2004

This place is usually hit or miss. The chicken is a sure-fire hit, but their fish can be underpar. I highly suggest you make reservations, as wait times can be extremely long. This restaurant is always crowded, unless you go at 11pm, when they are ushering people out, but will definitely let you in. It has a lively atmosphere, but if you are used to being waited hand anf foot, avoid this place ... because of the high level of volume of people coming in, it can take a long time before the waiter will come over to you. It also helps if you speak a little Spanish since the waiters aren't usually english-proficient. For the price, this place can not be beat. Pros: inexpensive, tasty, lively atmosphere Cons: , service lag time more

Pio Pio at least once a week! 10/19/2003

A total gem! Pio Pio is the kind of restaurant I adore introducing to friends, family, everyone! I'm there normally once a week (though somtimes more) because I just can't go more than a few days without that sauce. Chicken is perfection, maduros are sensational and the cebiche is stand-out. Do yourself a favor and order it ""spicy."" I've never had it any other way and can't imagine bothering. But watch out for the sangria, it's dangerous, as are the waiters who insist upon pouring it for you. Pros: Inexpensive, Great ambiance, Party atmosphere more

Sergeant DJ 6/21/2003

Terrific food!! This place is just great!!! You are always welcome, whether all dressed up, or in Jeans and a t-shirt!! The waitors, although their English is not the best, are very friendly and attentive! This is a great place to bring a date. This is an even better place to go with a group of friends and see gorgeous (trust me)South American Women !!! One after the next, i swear i needed a chiropractor after eating at this place from turning my head so much!!!! The weekends are the best(Fri, Sat, Sun). Enjoy it fellas and couples alike!!!! Pros: Great Music, Great Atmosphere, Awesome Sangria more

Excellent Food 1/13/2003

I have to admit, this is one of the best chicken in town. The food is great, the waiters are polite if you are not peruvian ofcourse. Well I think the price is way high considering this is a place where chicken is made. I don't think a whole chicken with salad and potatoe is worth $30 +. more
