This place is exactly what the name says. A classic all American burger with a classic pie for dessert. The food is good but not spectacular. Just a classic diner. more

Not worth it anymore..... 5/12/2011

I grew up in Pasadena going to Pie & Burger - but after last week's visit, I can't go back. The place is an absolute dump. Ok, so it's a ""greasy spoon"" and not a fancy restaurant, I get it, but in order to look past the disgusting grease-stained wallpaper, broken stools, grumpy staff, and high prices, the food needs to be worth it - and unfortunately, it is not anymore. My bacon cheese burger was gross, the fries flavorless, and the chocolate shake was watery. By, the way, the bill for 2 us of was $45....and I had to force myself to leave a $5 tip. $50 for 2 people to have a burger, fries, coke, and shake? Give me a break. The owner really needs to open his wallet, spend some money cleaning the place up, and rework the basics. There are so many better burger joints around. more

Nauseating 7/22/2010

This burger was the greasiest ball of lard I've ever encountered. So greasy that the bun reverted back to a wad of dough and fell off the patty in broken glops. It's as if they made the burger, then dunked it a few times in grease to get it as slimy as possible. Unsure why the staff was in such a foul mood, unless they're forced to eat this pig slop. Pros: Staff hates customers and try to get you to leave ASAP Cons: If you don't leave ASAP, they might serve you the ""food"" more

TV Dinner-Quality Food, Westside Prices 4/12/2010

Whaaaaaaat IS this place? Yes it's old, but why should anyone go here with the literally hundreds of other options that serve better food for better prices. HOLY MOLY $8 for a hot dog? Excuse me? The burgers are TINY, the decor is terrible, they don't take cards, the food is all defrosted. I am angry at the people who dragged me there. It's not even ironic! Cons: Bad food, high prices, cruddy interior, crusty service more

I saw the pies but those other things aren't burgers 5/27/2009

Would you pay $7.00 for a burger with small patty? Apparantly the people at Zagat think it's great to serve a $7.00 burger with barely any meat and no fries ($6.50 plus tax). The picture on this page is very decieving. A single McDonald's cheeseburger has more meat than the cheeseburger at Pie and Burger. Pros: Can't really think of any Cons: Over priced, small burger more

OK place to eat - certainly nothing special 1/3/2009

Fairly busy place with what appears to be plenty of regulars. Nothing stood out taste-wise. Burgers were fine, but In-N-Out down the street is a much better value. One fact to make clear here: food is absolutely overpriced. Food taste was very plain. Probably worth it to eat there once to make up your own mind (and recognize how overrated it really is). Low value, particularly if you care about price vs. flavor. Disappointed overall. Pros: Good location. Cons: Plain food. Too expensive. more

Good Burgers way Overpriced 10/18/2008

The burgers are tasty but not worth the price. The fries are dry and tasteless, and I would refuse them even if they were free. The service is average unless you are a regular. I would rather just go to In -n- Out the burgers are similar and half the price. Pros: Good Burgers Cons: Overpriced more

DISGUSTING!!! I COULDN'T WAIT TO GET OUT OF THERE 7/18/2008

It was incredibly overpriced. The old waitress ignored us and talked to one couple about her grandchildren for about 50 minutes. Then she spilled water all over. Then she left the pitcher of water on the counter. My wife pointed out that there was grime (black!) on the inside and then I noticed there were weird bubbles inside. No more water for me. Burger arrived. Disgusting. Meat is grade F. Side salad ($4) was a tiny bit of iceberg, two slices of tomato, a couple croutons, and a pint of thousand island dressing. The fries were obviously fried in oil that should have been changed. This is without a doubt THE MOST DISGUSTING MEAL I'VE HAD IN LOS ANGELES OR PASADENA. STAY AWAY -- IT IS NASTY!!!! more

Please don't go here 5/25/2008

I ate here based on it being the editor?s choice for best hamburger. Not only was the service terrible, but also the hamburger was at best decent. The waitresses were rude and had terrible attitudes. It was as if I was inconveniencing them by being there. I had better service at a bus station food counter in Guatemala City when I was backpacking (and I almost got robbed there). As I sat there, I was thinking to myself?do I really have to leave a tip? I couldn?t tell you how the pie was because I was so turned off that I left after my overpriced burger. Now about the food?the burger is good?for 4 dollars. Not for almost 7. Best of LA? Are the editors of CitySearch smoking? This place couldn?t hold a candle to Paul?s in the East Village (2nd Ave) or BurgerMeister in SF. In-and-out makes a better burger. In fact I would heartily recommend Wolfe Burger, The Hat and The Bucket (all nearby) in a heartbeat . Why this place is popular is beyond me. Just because they use and old cash register and take cash only doesn?t make it good. Don?t believe the hype. This place is awful (i used a differnet word but Citysearch wouldn't allow it) Pros: I dont know...I never have to go back...thats a good thing Cons: Where to begin...overpriced, rude service, no parking, knowing that there are better places less than a mile away more

Best burgers really ??? 5/4/2008

Been to this place tonight food was OK, nothing spectacular, there is a lot better not so far from there. Cons: Service more

Excellent food, WORST SERVICE EVER!!!!!!!!! 4/13/2008

Ok let's just begin by saying the positive aspects of the restaurant. The food is truly very good. From the burgers to the breakfast you will enjoy each bite........that is if you get it for take-out. I cannot begin to express how awful the service is and let me say that I've lived within walking distance for TEN years and have never once received friendly service. This is not a one time bad experience at this place, it is constant. I only eat there when a friend is willing to go pick it up as I always leave there with a bad taste in my mouth. For those reviewers who attributed the attitude to being Asian I can assure you it has nothing to do with race, it simply is all about people who are rude and cold, regardless of anyone's race. Time after time we are met with condesending comments and blank stares. These people are not employable and I can't believe anyone would hire them. The owner himself is a nice man and I just don't know how he's ended up with one total a-hole after the next. Time for a change because this place will not withstand as long as this service continues. Pros: Great food, anything on the menu Cons: WORST STAFF AND SERVICE YOU WILL EVER SEE more

For locals only! 3/12/2008

I've have read most of the reviews here and it seems that both the negatives ones and the positive ones are true. Great (greasy) burgers! Just like I like 'em. Fries are your average cafeteria, greasy and dry?McD's are much better. It appears that the owner thinks that his bread n'butter are the local customers, they don't care much about the occasional straggler that walks in to just ""try them out"". I felt it when I first went in there for the first time, you get that ?WTF are you? look and then after waiting for a very long while (I guess once they figure you ain?t going away until you eat) they decide to talk to you and tell you to sit where ever you want. Yep..waitresses are not friendly at all to the non-locals! All the time we stood there waiting, I saw how friendly the staff was with some of the other customers already eating, the kind of service I would have like to have but didn?t get. more

Behave yourself in a white community! 3/4/2008

This is the most discriminating restaurant I have ever been to in Southern California. A warning, if you are Asian, please do not venture into this restaurant unless you are with a white friend or expect be thrashed. I went there once on a Sunday morning, all this talk about over-priced food, no parking space and rude service was true. I am not a person who is usually too picky about the service, but to sit on a bar for 25 minutes waiting to order food while the Caucasian customers from your left and right who came after you had already ordered and gotten their food, that is just over the line. During the meal I was not attended even once by the waitress and had to ask five times for a piece of napkin and was refused any napkin after a white male customer who sat next to me threw his used napkin to my side of the table, when I started complaining and received only a nasty stare from the waitress, the same customer turned to me and told me to behave in a white community. The waitress certainly seem very ill educated and ill mannered. Cons: Worst service ever. more

Cool little place with awesome pies! 12/23/2007

It's an old school restaurant with what appears to be the same furniture it had when it opened (which I think is pretty charming). They serve the classic comfort food but you gotta try the pies - esp. the banana cream pie. It really is that good. Pros: Great pies, tasty food, nice staff, did I mention great pies? Cons: Parking (read the signs), burgers are just a little to pricey for what you get, it's very small more

Bad taste in my mouth 12/23/2007

After reading raving reviews, my husband and I finally made it for lunch. We got seated at the counter and ordered cheeseburgers and fries. It was nice to see your lunch being made right in front of your eyes. Fresh lettuce, freshly grilled hamburgers on a toasted bun with thousand island dressing were assembled and neatly wrapped. Pros: Freshness Cons: Service more

My BOC Vote 11/15/2007

I vote for Pie 'n' Burger for Citysearch BOC Best Hamburger EVERY YEAR. Although I enjoy the pie at this joint...it's really all about the burger for me. When the place is slow (which is not very often), you can actually see the cook putting burgers together. You know they're handmade...not frozen and shaped by a machine extruder. I would also recommend trying the peach pie (and peach ice cream) during the summer. You can't more fresh than that. Pros: Best burger!!, Best burger!! and Best burger!! Cons: no parking, and too many people know about it. more

Pricey...but overall a good throwback to the old fashioned diner! 9/14/2007

Great old fashioned diner that evidently has been around since the early 1960s. As first time visitors there, me and my BH (Better Half) decided to try the burger that many reviewers here, and at other sites such as Citysearch, rave about. And also like many reviewers I have to agree that for the price, yes they are quite small. That being said, I have to agree with those who rave about it. While over all it is a small burger, the patty is a good thickness and it was juicy and cooked to perfection. It was topped with fresh crispy iceberg lettuce and dill pickle chip(s). The Thousand Island dressing, touted to be 'homemade' by the restaurant, was in fact perfect and did taste homemade, and combined with the 'juicy patty' made this what every burger should be...a three napkin +, messy delight. So if that 's the type of quality you're looking for in a burger you shouldn't mind the pricey part, JMHO. And what's a great juicy messy burger without fries? So we had an order of fries between us. Again, a bit pricey. But again, served deepfried (hot to the table) to a crispy crunchy golden brown outside and tender inside...good 'medium' thickness cut...and with many long pieces as opposed to short stubby ones. While there we saw many other menu items being served. Mostly sandwiches which comprise most of the menu. Have to say they looked very delicious and good sized/proportioned. Oh, one complaint about our burgers. They didn't have a tomato slice. Don't know if it was omitted or that they just don't serve tomato with their burgers. But we do prefer tomato on burgers of this type. And although we didn't order 'pie', we did see huge slices being served to customers who ordered it. And I mean HUGE slices. So if you like pie you may very well like a helping from Pie n' Burger. Cons: Parking more
