Disappointed 2/14/2011

We thought we would try something different fo Valentines and chose Maddox Ranch House, money was not an object this night. for all the hoopla We've heard it was an overall disappointment. We had a reservation and was seated right away, no complaints there. The waitress was attentive but appeared just not friendly just all about getting the order and moving us out. The homemade rolls and rasberry butter was absolutely fantastic but that would be the only thing I would go there to eat. There were four of us and we all ordered something different and not one of us would go back. In fact two of us took maybe 2 or 3 bites of the bison steak and turkey steak and didn't eat anymore. There chicken is very good and eating at the outside pull ups but my recommendation would be to not hassle with inside the restaurant. more

Highly over rated 5/23/2009

All the locals rave about this place. I gave it a try and found the steaks to be very tough, overcooked and no flavor at all. Pros: Rolls Cons: Steaks, Dirty Glasses, Service more

A Must Try!! 2/14/2009

This place is worth the travel. If you have never been here it is a dinning treat. I have been here many times and I am not going to sit here and tell you that you will have the best experience no matter what. I have found that people are different in many ways. This place has a very ranch house atmosphere consider lively by some and not romantic enough by others. That being said I have had one of the most romantic dinners of my life at this restaurant but it is about timing and most of all you. If you enjoy really processed hormone fed meat then you will not enjoy your meal here. If you have found the perfect steak grown in the perfect place and only served at then you may not like this. The Beef is raised by the ranch and served in there establishment. They also raise bison and serve buffalo burgers that are an organic treat. As mentioned in many articles the rolls are good but if you can bake you can make rolls this good at home and your favorite grandmas recipe jam is better than ras-butter. Don't take me wrong ,there good, but you just can't find this steak else where do your self a favor try it. If you don't like it there it is. As for me and many of the people I know we are appalled to see so many reviews where people think you should go for fried chicken and bread. Go enjoy the atmosphere and the one of a kind steaks. Pros: one of a kind steaks Cons: distance from freeway/toruist attractions more

lunch, eh? 9/17/2008

Glorified roadhouse grub. Forgotten parts of the order, when it was not even busy. Taste and quality that does not justify the price. Maybe for the 'old time' feel but not for the food. Pros: chicken Cons: service, fricook quality of the food. more

39 years of good food. Too bad they are in their 41rst year. 8/9/2008

The rolls ARE good. The wait is too long. The cuts of meat are ok, but not great. The fried chicken is not bad. For me the value is too low to detour off the freeway. more

The best steakhouse in Utah, a family tradition 7/9/2008

The rolls are to die for, everyone smuggles them home. Ignore the pasta it's subpar. The soups are good, the salads are standard but you are going for the steak which couldn't get any better. It's worth the drive. When my parents and my husband's parents wanted to get together to discuss our wedding this is where I took them, now they are addicted too. Make reservations or you will wait. It has a rustic look, don't let it scare you or the masses of people and the huge parking lot. I wish I could go there today. Don't be afraid to go in a huge group they can handle it. My Grandma had her 80th birthday dinner here and we had about 35 people with no problem. Pros: Best steak in Utah Cons: It's in Brigham city! more

Maddox is hyped up for some valid reasons, so DO try it - if you go with a few warnings, you'll enjoy. 4/8/2008

Maddox is a HUGE local favorite for some good reasons. The #1 draw for most I know is the rolls -they are fabulous, and they keep comin' with raspberry butter as long as you say you want more. Another specialty is the house-brewed root beer and sarsparilla. I recommend sarsparilla to the more adventurous - it's like root beer, but more potent with licorice flare. Maddox has rich homemade soups. My favorite main course item is the fried chicken. It is like no other for one very distinguishing reason - no greasy skin. As a chicken skin hater, I rejoice in being able to actually enjoy the crispy coating! Losing the skin does not sacrifice moistness - it's divine! Maddox desserts, including pies, cheesecake and homemade ice cream are praiseworthy. I've read bad reviews on the seafood cocktail, complaining about imitation krab - but I argue that it's really good - if you like imitation krab. Sometimes I add the optional chilled shrimp for a little extra. The green salad's good. Now that I've raved as many locals do, I'll give you proper warning on a few things to expect or avoid that aren't so favorable.... Don't get a steak here - any cut. They just don't do 'em right. Get the chicken, turkey steak, halibut, or, at lunch hours, roast beef. Expect to pay more. It's a lot of food. Don't expect quiet, elegant romance. It's a big, family-oriented ranch house. Expect noise and crowds. If you go on a Friday or Saturday (not recommended), expect to wait at least 30 minutes, unless you go earlier than 6:00. If they are particularly busy and you have a large party, they may suggest quicker seating at the neighboring Lodge. DO NOT accept the offer! The Maddox Lodge is the pits! They herd you into a huge, noisy banquet hall, give you a different menu with limited offerings, and have two waitresses try to serve your party as well as the neighboring giant party of noisy high school prom-goers. Gratuity is included at the Lodge, of course. Pros: Heavenly rolls, delicious and hearty comfort food, unique drinks. Cons: Crowds/wait, out-of-the-way location, noise, mediocre steaks. more

Say what? 11/14/2007

Maddox, was, well, an experience. The food is VERY overpriced and nothing out of the ordinary. The menu is extremely limited, and the food is nothing to rave about. We did love the rolls, but it stopped there. If you're into fried chicken, we recommend driving a little bit north of the ranch house to the car hop service, which serves the exact same chicken and rolls for about half the price. Pros: Comfortable atmosphere Cons: High price for area, bland food more

Best Rolls and Cornbread on Earth! 11/2/2007

I love the Maddox eating experience! Starting with the Rolls and Cornbread, then right on through to the Main Course. That is usually the Fried Chicken for me. A few months ago, me and my wife went to Maddox for our Anniversary. On this particular trip the customer service was not quite up to par. I didn't want to say anything but my wife did, so we went up to the hostess and told her of our displeasure. The response was more than we could have hoped for! A sincere apology and a gift certificate later, we were happy as clams once again. If you have not been to Maddox yet, you better go. It's well worth the drive. Pros: Wonderful food and service. Cons: Prices are a little high. more

I LOVE Maddox Ranch House! 9/3/2007

I love this place! The food is ALWAYS good! It is always jammed with people and that tells how delicious the food is! The employees are always so nice! They make you feel special every time! You feel like you are being mothered! I travel out of my way to go to Maddox! Very inexpensive! I love all their food! Even their rolls are wonderful.Their chicken is superb! And, I don't even like chicken, but I LOVE Maddox chicken! Their drive thru is great! Pros: Everything about Maddox is ABOVE AVERAGE! Cons: I wish they had a place in Salt Lake City! more

Country Cookin Delight 6/18/2007

WOW! This is the restaurant of "down home cookin". Everything from cream soda, root beer, soups, dessert, and rolls... it's all home made and fresh each day! My personal favorite is the tender flavorful prime rib with gravy. But don't forget the unforgettable chicken that my Mother keeps coming back for. I recommend the raspberry butter on the mouth watering rolls. This small beautifully designed restaurant is great for the family or a fun evening with the spouse. Don't forget about your wedding, anniversary, or family reunion their logged lodge next door caters to them all! I recommend reservations, people travel from all over for this country cookin. more

save your money 11/29/2006

This was my second visit, I said after the first, I would never go back. I should of listened to myself and not all the raving reviews. My first visit I ordered the prime rib and requested it rare, I was told it only comes medium or well. Who cooks prime over 140 degrees? I ordered the top of madox a trio of there specialties, a fillet, a piece of fried chicken and fried shrimp. My steak was ok, nothing to write about though, the chicken was at best average and the shrimp, well don't ever order seafood 1500 miles from the ocean. I also asked for the seafood cocktail. What Seafood? It was imitation crab. I would consider that vist average execpt for the price. This place is not shy. And when I sent the seafood coctail back, no one cared. I just returned from dinner there again, one year has past. It was a horible experience. I spent all day reading reviews looking at the menu and talking to neighbors, all said good things. So I gave them a second chance. Big mistake. I ordered the 24oz T-bone rare, was served medium, could not even cut it with a knife, let alone chew it. My mother had the chicken fried steak, she tried to eat it but when I sampled it , it was extemely salty. My wife and kids had burgers. I only had three bites of my steak and refused the rest, hey but they only charged me half price for it. ( $13.00 for three horible bites ). If you think there reviews are a joke go to there web site and read there satisfaction guaranty under menu. It is make believe as well. I will never go there again. Do yourself this favor and take my advise, if you know anything about good food or enjoy a pleasent evening out, don't go. more

Corn Pones for Everyone 11/15/2006

I love this place. I have been eating here a couple times a year for the last five years. I agree with some of the other reviews that the steaks are not the best but that is not what you go to madoxx for. Madoxx has the best skinless fried chicken anywhere. The turkey steaks are my personal favorite. If you haven't ever had one then you should definatly make the trip. If you are looking for steak you might want to think about somewhere else but for chicken and excellent rolls and corn bread this is a great choice. Pros: Turkey steak, Corn pones, Rolls, and Fried Chicken Cons: Parking, and Closed Sundays, Don't take reservation. more

The place your grandfather would love 9/9/2006

Madoxx may have been the "original steakhouse", but it isn't something I would make a special trip to drive to. It is mostly a great place for "dirt farmers" who don't know what really good food is all about. (i.e. I think it's good because my dad told me it was good... and he would know because he was raised on a farm) Their steaks are at least average, but count on them being over cooked. The atmosphere is appropriate for all of your wifes, and at least 50-60 of your favorite children. You can't hear yourself think, because of all the noise. I'm sure it's "the place" for lots of people. As cookie says: "The food's hot, brown, and there's plenty of it" Pros: Lot's of food for the money Cons: Parking, Ambience (what's that mean??), Service more

Worth the drive for amazing comfort food. 8/24/2006

This place has just the best steaks, chicken and chicken fried steaks ever. The soups have always been good, but you can skip the salad or "seafood" tofu cocktail. The pies are very tasty, and while the atmosphere has a farm house flavor, it's a comfortable casual place to dine for excellent food. Closed on Sundays and Mondays. Pros: Beef, chicken, shrimp steak and corn pones. Cons: Side dishes, noisy, crowded more

Worst restaurant I've been to. 1/17/2006

This is, by far, the worst restaurant I've ever been to. The may be good, but the service is nothing more than awful. And forget about making reservations. The last reservation I made, I ended up waiting for over 45 minutes after the reservation to be seated, and yes I left. Forget going to the drive through. I ordered a hamburger and requested no onions and what did I get on the hamburger -- onions. How hard is it to not put onions on a hamburger. Pros: parking Cons: crowded, bad service, screws up on orders more

This is the most overrated restaraunt ever 12/4/2005

I have been to Maddox several times and have always been extremely unimpressed. About 75% of the menu is deep-fried and nothing tastes good (apart from their rolls which are fairly descent). The last time I went we had reservations and still waited for 30 minutes. The only reason to go to Maddox is if you want big portions as Maddox does give you plenty of food. Pros: Descent prices. Cons: Terrible food., Far too busy more

The Almighty God of Steakhouses 7/12/2005

I drive there every summer all the way from Washington just for the steak (and make an appearence at the families house just to make them happy)!. My favorite is the prime rib with aju and mushrooms! My mom! always gets the 32oz. yes 32 ouncesPorter house. All their meat they get fresh off thier livestock in the back! The meal soups and appetizers are amazing (especially the rasberry butter)! The place is massive and a lodge next door. Anybody that denies this is the best, u will be struck down by 32 ounces of steak! Pros: steak, steak, steak, , great for groups, rasberry condoments Cons: very busy more

What a great find! 7/5/2005

The restaurant is a great place for a quiet romantic dinner, a family dinner or other special occasion. How can this be? There are so many rooms and settings that you will find a comfortable place no matter what the occasion or who you are with. They even have a very large lodge adjacent to the actual restaurant that can accommodate very large groups. This is my first choice - this is one of my very favorite places. Pros: unique entrees, delicious rolls, friendly service more

Mediocre and overpriced 6/27/2005

Went there for the first time on saturday. The place was busy, but we were seated within 5 minutes. My wife and I both had their kwik-lunchs. I had the chicken and my wife had the beef. I don't see how anyone can say the portions are large, as all I got was one chicken breast, a scoop of carrots and yams, and french fries, and my wife gor the same, but with a breaded beef patty weighing about 4 oz. With one soda and one piece of pie, the bill was close to $30. The food was good, but not great. A lot of money for a mediocre lunch. more
