Star has fallen... 11/8/2009

Jalapeno cornbread is gone. The new breads, butters and spreads are no comparison. The parsley pesto spread was tasteless and the eggnog tasting butter was a little weird. No more dogfish head on draft, service was terrible (there's one girl there that is very good, but she was there with the original owners that knew how to run a restaurant), we ordered wings and they were out, but the waiter never told us and then just brought out our entrees. I used to order the chicken dinner, and it was huge moist and delicious. Now it is dry, salty and tiny. So disappointing, considering it used to be one of only good restaurants in the area that was affordable. I will not be going back :-( Pros: Ambiance Cons: Service, menu has gone downhill more

where's the cornbread 8/18/2009

the cornbread is gone, they now have inian flatbread, the dry rub for the steak is gone, bbq is gone, and some girl tried to sell me shots at the table as if it were a club, that neon green shot would have paired perfectly with my wine. 4th change of the menu in 6 months, new owners, i'm done with it Pros: can't think of any Cons: menu changed yet again, new owner is a rocket scientist more

Insulted with Cougar Night 6/11/2009

What or what is Jake's doing? Four of us (females in our 30's--all professional with husbands and babies) went to Jake's a couple weeks ago to celebrate a birthday. To our surprise and laughter we were told it was ""Cougar Night"". Yes, Cougar Night. Not knowing what to expect, we were informed that it is a night when ""older"" women take center stage. I do NOT classify 32 as an older woman. Based upon the crowd that tried to fill the space, we were immediately offended. Older men (past their prime) sitting at the bar watching TV and sipping drinks was not our idea of a vibe. Maybe they were waiting to pounce the perfect cougar---ie: Joan Collins or Liz Taylor. Pros: Decor Cons: Lack of authenticity more

A staggering disappointment 4/9/2009

Jake's Bar, as it used to be known has a special place in my heart. It was the restaurant I took my now wife on our first date, where I later asked out, where we and several friends came to have drinks the night I proposed, where I went to celebrate getting into and graduating graduate school, and where I would just frequently eat on a regular basis. My wife and I loved the duck nachos, she loved the ribs, and I absolutely loved the meatloaf and steak. Needless to say, we know the place. I recently took a group of friends, excited; only to find this new pretentious decor, akward vibe and a sever case of personality disorder. The Gastropub wants to be a Pan-European restaurant, but fails. The prices have been raised, and all the classics are gone. The classics have been replaced with modernistic European dishes that neither satisfy or impress. One friend ordered a walnut salad, and received a handful of greens with literally four walnuts in it, all for the price over $13.00. I ordered a raw tuna dish which turned out to be four small pieces of tuna accompanied by a couple wedges of flat bread. I could go on and on. In the end I was extremely embarrased because my wife and I hyped this place up to all our friends, and in the end it was outright laughable. I apologized to them for the mistake. It breaks my heart to have a restaurant so dear to my wife and I turned into this mockery. I don't say this often, but I hope this venture fails. When so many other great restaurants falter in these economic times, it would be a crime to keep The Gastropub at Jake's open. Pros: Location Cons: Too numerous more

The Gastropub at Jakes gets IT! 3/1/2009

As a frequent diner at Jakes in South Miami, I have supported this ""local"" restaurant for many years. Recently (last two weeks) this neighborhood bar and restaurant has gone through a refreshing update including some new food items to a very inviting, current interior design. The upgraded food menu has some interesting choices like: Boards (several International nibbles offering fresh crudites, cheeses, and pates) to my favorite -- Lucy's Special (a mouth watering pork roast served with delicious pickled onions and a mojo cream sauce brought to your table in a cast iron crock) it is the BEST. As always, the staff is friendly, the drinks poured well, and the food --delicious, including my old favorite Patrick's Special. A terrific achievement in the art of re-inventing one's self. Pros: The new decor, new food items Cons: Parking (or lack of) more

Where did the old Jakes go? 2/25/2009

I don't want to slam any venture especially in these uncertain economic times, but I must say I don't like the new vibe of Jake's in South Miami. My wife and I, along with several other couples frequented Jake's several times per month. We also always brought out of town guests for good food in a great local environment. This new re-incarnation of The Gastropub is very bizarre--purple walls and white wood; it changed the local, no pretense feel. We went last week and had an alright meal with ok service. The atmosphere is what we miss. Sometimes you don't mess with something if it isn't broken. Pros: somewhat of good value for drinks and food Cons: decor, atmosphere more

Yummy food, great surroundings 2/17/2009

I'm not sure what all of these other posts are complaining about. The Gastropub at Jake's is still Jake's but better! The new look of the restaurant is clean and bright. Overall, quite an improvement (just check out the bathrooms!!). The food is great... most of the old favorites are still there and there are plenty of new favorites to discover (try the mussels). The best part about Jake's was the neighboorhood feeling, great food and fun staff, all of those things are at the Gastropub, just in a much better looking package. Pros: Everything! Cons: Lack of parking more

the death of jakes 2/13/2009

i was just reading all these reviews and thought to myself they must be joking, these must be employees writing these. jakes always had a warm inviting atmosphere, when i sat at a booth tonight (with my kids) there was a book on display called intercourses with a woman covered only with flower petals on the cover. explaining that to my kids was not part of the dinner plans. the hostess was standing behind what appeared to be a concierge counter. the place is loud, i noticed they took off the sound panels on the wall i usually sit by. and they painted the bar white, they destroyed the most beautiful part of the place. they no longer have duck nachos on the menu. not sure what they're turning this place into but if i had wanted that i would have gone to a place like that, i came looking for a warm neighborhood place, not a bunch of servers in tiny shorts spackled with make-up Cons: they don't make the duck nachos anymore more

WOO Gastropub new look in miami 2/13/2009

Perhaps the best restaurant in Miami. Our meal was exquisite from start to finish. The service was impeccable. Perfect for a special occasion and very romantic.... Cons: parking more

The Gastropub Delivers the Goods!!! 2/12/2009

I just visited the ""new"" Jake's, the Gastropub @ Jake's - What a great surprise!!! Pros: The New Menu Cons: Valet Parking sometimes a little slower than I'd like more

Worst Management and horribly run restaurant 12/10/2008

Pros: not many Cons: Taimark the GM more

SUPERB ! 6/3/2008

As a first-time patron of Jake's one night ago, I found it to be quite an exceptional dining and drinking establishment. Bartender Harry was ever so attentive and professional. I am happy to have watched the Yankees - Tigers game there ... Intend to go back for their Filet Mignon Special whenever the opportunity arises again. Cheers ! Five Stars !! more

Awful customer service 2/18/2008

I will never recommend or give my business to Jake's again! My colleagues and I went for the first time a couple of weeks ago for the first time. We were asked to leave our table because a reservation was waiting. Had the manager checked with the server he would have known we had just paid our $250 bill (plus tip) and were just finishing up our last drinks. He made an off color joke when he first approached the table making us think he was actually hitting on one of the ladies at the table then proceeded to tell us that we had passed our 2 hour limit at the table. Since when to restaurants put a time limit on parties actually spending money? It was offensive, especialy when we asked how he would react if it were him being asked to leave and he had no response. more

Delicious fried oysters 10/25/2006

Having searched far and wide for non-greasy fried oysters, I found them at Jake's. They are listed as an appetitizer so I had a double order plus a salad for my dinner. Absolutely delicious, light and fried just right. I was so enamored by my oysters that I'm not certain what my husband ordered. I do remember that he enjoyed his meal. Though we had our first experience at Jake's almost six months ago, I'm still thinking about it and will definitely return. Pros: Food and valet parking Cons: gets a bit noisy when crowded more

Great Wine List! 1/9/2006

Great time.. great wine... I will be back for the tiger shrimp pizza and my boyfriend for that NY strip steak! Awesome! Pros: Wine List, Great Food more

I like jake's 9/15/2003

Wednesday nite is half price any wine on the wine list. Pretty good wine list too. The 16 ounce NY strip is an excellent value at $16.00. My only gripe is different servers bring your food so there is no accountability. Our entree came as we were just getting started on our pizzette appitizer, which I enjoyed. I would have enjoyed it more if my steak was not sitting on the table next to it. Pros: good wine list, valet parking, good food Cons: poor pacing of meal more

Best Place in town 7/21/2003

Geat food, great wine list, great service. Great price. If you want to eat before or after a movie. Valet park at Jake's, go eat and then to the movie. They charge you an extra $1 but it is well worth it. The steak is unbelieveable and it is only $16! more

Jake's is great. 10/31/2002

I've been to Jake's a few times and it really has a very nice ambiance. The lighting is nice, the drinks are good and so is the food. I would recommend this place to someone who wants good food with a relaxing atmosphere. more
