I wouldn't hesitate to adopt from Hope again! 1/4/2012

We adopted our dog from Hope almost 7 years ago. These comments are specifically geared to their dog adoption policies as that is all I am familiar with. The people at Hope were very helpful and proactive. I feel they did a great job informing me of their policies, many of which helped my dog become acclimated more quickly to me and my home. For example, one of their policies is that you have to take the dog to training classes very shortly after you adopt. I think this policy made it very easy for my dog to get used to me - it allowed us to interact with each other and established me as "owner". In addition, all dogs are up to date on shots and spayed or neutered before they are adopted. The adoption prices are also extremely reasonable ($88 when I adopted). Another thing I really liked about Hope is that they provide foster homes for all their dogs, which means that in most cases the dog is potty trained and assimilated to a home environment when you adopt them. It also gives the foster family a good opportunity to observe if the dog is good around children, other animals, men, etc. When I adopted my dog, I was able to go to the foster home and visit the dog in a home environment which I thought was very helpful. It allowed me to see interact with her outside of a cage or a small play yard (like many humane societies). My dog was very well take care of and very much fit the description they provided on their website with regards to temperament, likes, fears, etc. I know a few other people who have also adopted animals from Hope and had good experiences. I have recommended Hope to several people and would not hesitate to adopt from them again in the future. more

Don't adopt through this place 2/23/2010

I agree with "it's questionable." We returned a dog to them after it growled and snarled at us and our family members without being provoked. No food or toys were involved in the incidents that occurred. It was the dog being dominant and aggressive toward us just for the sake of being dominant over us. It even happened when we were simply petting the dog. It got even worse. We were stunned to see that they re-posted the animal, putting it up for adoption again immediately, and put "ha, ha" and "tee, hee" in the description when they mentioned the dog's aggressive disposition. They also left out the detail that the dog was even aggressive with no toys or food around, which would mislead people into thinking that it's only a food issue. A growling, assertive dog who snarls for no reason is not humorous. It's nothing to joke or laugh about. This is serious. They're very irresponsible and overly casual in the approach they take with their animals. Don't adopt from here. There are plenty of reputable, responsible foster groups out there. more

it's questionable 12/15/2009

They did not assess the pet's behavior. They did no SAFER test or any other test of the animal. They did no home visit and did not check any references. Makes me question how careful or thorough this place is. If you want a pet without people really checking carefully into you or your background or circumstances, go through HOPE Safehouse. They really need to be more careful with their animals and adoption process. Anyone who cares about the pets would have these steps already in place. I do NOT recommend this group. Look elsewhere, and ask a lot of questions. more

This is an animal shelter that has the "no kill" policy. Meaning, no matter what they will not put an animal down. The place doesn't look that well taken care of, but each animal is unique and lovable. Recently my brother has adopted a cat from there and he's the biggest most adorable cat ever. He's friendly and has grown out of his frighten stage very quickly. I suggest if you want to adopt a new family member, come here! more
