Editorial review from Citysearch 1/4/2013

BOOO, French Riviera Spa.. I am very disappointed in the fact I joined this gym and am now in a 1 yr agreement with them. Should have requested a temporary pass. This place is dirty, depressing, the locker rooms are a disfunctional disgrace. The whole place is an epic disappointment. The pool is NASTY and the whirlpool is even more scary! I went for my 1st cycle class and that was the final straw before I decided to post a review. The girl who lead the class was 15 minutes late, she brought in a boom box and blasted rap music in this cement 10 x 12 room. She sang to it. She was a pathetic instructor. Did not allow the class to stretch before she began the class. Not everyone wants to listen to rap music blasted at them for an hour. I regret joining. I will not be recommending this place to ANYONE! DO NOT JOIN THIS CLUB unless you prefer the very bottom of the barrel. more

One of the Best Experiences in Town 8/14/2011

I was really amazed when I entered the gym for the first time and found a lot of equipments; trainers teaching students and front staff who were so nice and friendly. I found their genuine care for me when they were providing me guidelines about the gym, spa and sauna. It was one of the best experiences if you are really treated kindly. Thank you for your team. more

a sorry excuse for a spa a minus 5 rating if possible 11/4/2010

not only do they lie to you they have a contract that states anything they tell you they are not accountable for.I have been in business for 35 years and this is the most outrageous thing I have ever heard of.Everybody needs to contact the better business bureau or their attorney after encountering this spa\r I hope people read these reviews before signing up for a membership. If you do sign up for a membership be aware they lie about cancelling. After 5 full days of providing change of address bills to new address and so forth I have been told they must reveiw it.I have moved given them my new address an electric bill and a bank check with my new address and still they will not cancell my membership because it needs to be reveiwed. You tell me are these people you want to be associated with? more

WTHeck 7/22/2010

I recently came in the French with a family member on a free pass. As soon as I walk in they literally sent me to a guy who convince me to sign up. He stated that if I wasn't happy then I could cancelled in three days. So I said okay what the heck!. Sadly to say when I tried to cancel on the next day because I wasn't happy with the way the facility or the ppl who work there. When I tried to cancel, they gave me the run around. First they said I had to come back the next day because the guyt who signed me up is not at work today. I asked the guy at the front desk if it would be too late and He said No. Tell me why when I came back the next day, the guy who signed me up was still not at work today. The other guy again said he was not coming and I could cancel the next day with no problem. Guess what happen.......... The next day when I tried to cancel, Another guy who works there told me that it was too late. WTHHHHHHH..... Even when I told them what I being trying to two days ago, they said it was too late. Pros: nothing Cons: No reliabilty on there cancellation process. more

Contact the Better Business Bureau. 7/12/2010

Sales rep stated: Pay monthly in person, cancel at any time. Now contracted to pay automatically from account/credit card for 2 years. No cancellation option other than moving or medical condition. NONE! Attempts to cancel met with run around and outright lies.\r \r Online complaints are easy to file at the Better Business Bureau. Don't be a victim! Pros: Convenient locations Cons: Lie to you and take your money - 2 year contract! more

Lets complain about 35 dollars a year. 5/12/2010

Its very obvious that the individuals wirting these reviews complaining about a 30 dollar facility improvement fee not only have little to no training in law but also don't have much common sense.\r \r First off, we will start with the common sense part. French Riviera has the most gyms in Memphis and sports a 24 hour facility. Unlike other gyms all memberships are unrestricted meaning you can use all facilities at any time with all the memberships. Classes are included, childcare and tanning are availiable, there is a pool and a sauna at a few locations, and also has a cardio movie theater. The flagship French Riviera gym on Poplar sports the largest selection of resistance and free weight training of any gym in memphis. \r \r I dare you to find a gym anywhere in the country that you can work out at with those ameneties for only 35 dollars a year. You would have to be an absolute fool to go to another gym and spend 15-30 dollars a month and fork over another enrollment fee.\r \r I do realize the concept of it might be disconserting...""Well if they create a 30 dollar fee they will just keep adding fees they will just keep hiking on us OMG!!!"". First off the Facility Improvement Fee was voted on by the members and passed with an overwhelming majority. People like having new fresh equipment to work on and gym improvements.\r \r Also if the fee ever raises to a point that is unnaceptable than take your buisness elsewhere....This is America people, we basically worship the concept of capitilism. If your un happy than just leave and pay alot more somewhere else ;).\r \r Now lets move on to the legality of the fee increase. I am a member of the gym and have personally read every part of the contract, unlike the people who posted some of the reviews here.\r \r The first loophole in the contract is that it states if you EVER move residences and don't notify French Riviera it nullifies the contract. That in and of itself doesn't mean the French Riviera can increase fees at will but it does make it near impossible to form a class action law suit because simply put the majority of members, especially life time members have at least moved once in about twenty years.\r \r Secondly it is an at will contract. Once the term on the membership expires we can ammend it, if the terms are unnaceptable you don't have to sign it. Thats why you renew every year, its another loophole in the contract.\r \r I know this sounds partially bad, but go to any gym in this country and the contracts are structured very similiar.......\r \r Business is business people, companies are out to make money. But if your only having to pay 35 dollars a year for the best gym in memphis capitilism says you stick with it.\r \r I guess we have to realize some people don't have much sense... Pros: Great classes, helpfull staff, great pricing. Cons: Not open 24 hours on the weekend more

French 3/1/2010

They have no control over your membership it seems! I paid in full for a year plus a bs $30.00 equipment upgrade fee, but my account shows delinquent. Paid 180.00 in september and its now March and my account still shows delinquent and i have to explain everyday when I go in!!!!!! Terrible. I have 7 months left but have decided to move over to ATC now!!! Done with the FRENCH! Cons: They don't do what they say and they cant get anything right more

French Riviera Spa buyer beware! 1/26/2010

I have been a lifetime member for over tweenty years. I signed a contract with this club for a lifetime membership for several hundred dollers with a FIXED $5 a year maintenance fee which I have always paid on time. This year I recieved a $35 maintenance fee for alleged club upgrades. I talked to their main office and they stated that they had the legal right to do so.( Alter there contract at will, I supose...)They also stated that they did not even have a copy of my contract and had no obligation to keep a record of it! I was told if I did not pay that I would have my membership terminated! What's up with that!\r DO NOT TRUST THIS CLUB! Cons: Shady Business practices more

Great Workout Facility 1/4/2010

The French is a wonderful gym and complaining about a once a year membership is absolutely ridiculous. I pay $180 a year (including the facility improvement fee) and I have no complaints. They have purchased new equipment and are doing expansions on a couple of the gyms. The aerobics classes that are included with the membership are wonderful. \r \r Rating the gym a 1 just because of the $30 facility improvement fee is absurb. (No I am not an employee of the gym Pros: Gym equipment Cons: Not open 24 hours more

Breach of Contract for Lifetime Membership? 12/28/2009

About 20 years ago, the Tenn. state law concerning spa memberships was changed to pay a onetime fee of $150 and $5 a year life membership fee. In hopes of a French Riviera building close to where I live, I have continued to pay the nominal fee according to the state contract rules, even though I have not worked out at the their spa during this time. I still have my Tenn. contract. Today I noticed when paying the fee that it has jumped to $35. I DO believe lifetime membership means lifetime as I am not dead. So I wonder if there will be any type of class action suit for this breach of contract? Cons: Breach of Contract for Lifetime Membership? more

BEWARE...DO NOT BECOME A MEMBER 12/8/2009

I have been a lifetime member from 1986 with a locked in renewal rate of $5.00 per year. When I got my renewal it was $35.00 and I was told the additional $30 was a ""facility improvement fee"". I have complained to the Better Business Bureau. They should not be allowed to add a fee to a locked-in contract! I would highly encourage anyone with the same problem to file a complaint with their local BBB!! Maybe if they receive enough complaints they will remove this fee.\r Cons: Shaddy Business Practices!!!!!! more

DO NOT JOIN 9/23/2009

six months after joining I had to move and after calling 20 different people and sending a number of letters and faxes they still refuse to cancel my membership, further more they sent me a 600 dollar bill through a collection agency Cons: THEY WILL NEVER LET YOU CANCEL more

Great Cardio Classes 5/22/2008

I use the Cordova and Poplar location and the staff is helpful. The thing I like are the classes, especially yoga and the latin dance class. Monday nights are very busy and sometimes the spin classes are full. Pros: classes, staff Cons: monday nights very crowded more

BEWARE! High crime, car break ins all the time and they steal from your lockers! 5/7/2007

I've been a member for over a year. I just got use to the poor equipment and unfriendly atmosphere, but when they broke into my car and stole my purse that was just the last straw. Of course, I had paid cash for my yearly membership and they wouldn't let me cancel or get money back when I said I wasn't coming back. Don't put yourself in arms way! more
