Best

Awesome food. I've been to all of the El Campesino locations but the Monroeville location takes the cake. Everything on the menu is fantastic. Enchilada and burrito sauces, salsa,...

how do you mess up a tamale and enchilada? They seem to have no basic cooking skills. All the fake ""Mexican"" atmosphere in the world can't make up for a basic lack of a decent e...

Close as you get 4/8/2004

I lived in San Antonio, Tx Where I got the oppurtunity to get to know what authentic Mexican food can be like. I loved it. Before Elcampesino came I couldn't find anything close. My search has ended. Thier food and variety is better that any others in authenticity, quality, price, and quanity ( I always need a doggy bag). Try and enjoy. more

Best Mexican in Pittsburgh 1/29/2004

After trying several lame ""Mexican"" restaurants in Pittsburgh, we stumbled on to El Campesino. THis is dirt-cheap, delicious Mexican food. Pretty authentic, great chiles and chicken and BYOB. If you are searching for Mexican, look no further. Pros: great food, friendly service Cons: no alcohol more

Poor food 1/1/2004

One day I was given guacamole that was substandard. The avocado was clearly underripe. When I asked for an explanation, I was told ""No, the avocado's weren't ready, but we served it anyway, because you ordered it"" I told them I would not pay for anything this poor. I also complained about the continuing poor quality of the salsa, and was told ""That's how it comes out of the can"". A Mexican restaurant that can't make its own salsa is beneath contempt. I have not returned since. more

A Texan On Mexican 11/4/2003

The Mexican food here is different from I am used to having recently moved from west Texas and eating Tex-Mex all the time. I don't like chain restaurants Mexican food very much, I prefer the smaller, family owned type places and this restaurant only has four locations across Pittsburgh. The Monroeville location is the kind of small ""hole in the wall"" location being in a strip mall, which is fine with me! The red enchilada sauce is somewhat sweet, the salsa mild, the restaurant itself small with little waiting time though it was full to the brim when we went, not too noisy for the size. The salsa, chicken enchiladas, chicken burrito, or beef enchilada are all reccommended. Pros: Inexpensive, Authentic, Small more

close but no ceegar 10/30/2003

There still isn't a Mexican restaurant in Pittsburgh. But, for ""North Mexico"" (i.e. combo plates), this is as good as it gets in Pittsburgh. Somebody please give me a quarter million so I can start a joint that serves food that the campensinos a tomar south of Monterrey. Having lived in el D.F. for awhile, I miss the real thing. Pros: honest food, limited, but good Cons: limited menu, only north mx food more

Simply the best truly authentic mexican 6/26/2003

This place is a rare gem in Western PA. Salsa and guacomole is fresh and authentic, as are the freshly made chips. Meals are generously portioned, with superb fresh ingredients also. This is the true traditional mexican style - simple basic flavors, with the occasional boldness of the different chiles, including traditional queso blanco and a fabulous mole sauce. If you want the real deal, or want to find out what that's like, come to this place! The only criticism is they are occasionally inconsistent - like one time in 10 or so the chips might not be fresh as they should be. But a polite request is all it takes to correct any problem, their service is very good. P.S. they recently remodeled and it's a much more attractive place to be (though still not intimate and somewhat noisy during busy hours) Pros: Authentic, Fresh, Inexpensive Cons: Occasionally Noisy more

My vote for best in town! 6/19/2003

After moving from California in '93, I had despaired of finding a traditional Mexican restaurant -- El Campesinos fits the bill! I especially like the chicken mole, and the homemade tamales are fantastic! Worth the drive from wherever in the 'burgh you're at! Pros: Great food!, Friendly service, Great value! Cons: Sometimes crowded, No alcohol license more

The dining room is simple, with little decoration. People don't come here for ambience, but rather for good Mexican food in large quantities at low prices.
