Started going here when it 1st opened. Food was very good, however since right befor their expansion, the quality of food dropped and the service became horrible. I decided to try it again and that was a mistake I will not make again. more

Worst customer service and mediocre food 1/29/2012

Greeted by a man who grunted at me as if I were bothering him by wanting a table. I told him ""1 for lunch"" to which he turned and walked towards the booths. He threw the menu onto a table and kept on walking. I assumed this was my table for lunch. Server wasnt all that great at customer service either and the food looked like it was just slung onto the plate. Will never return and make sure I spread the word. Horrible place! more

Horrible 1/6/2012

This place was horrible. The food was 3 ingredients slopped on a plate and not even cooked through. I sent it back. I told the server I'd like to pay for my drink and leave, but another man came out and I was threatened with a ""fight"" if I didn't pay for the food I sent back. Needless to say, I'm never stepping foot in that place again. more

A disappointment 8/29/2007

I first went to this restaurant about 3 years ago and remembered it as being very good, as close to authentic as it could be here in PA, Mexican food. I'm not in this area of town often and had the opportunity to have lunch at El Campesino a couple of days ago. I don't know if the food quality has really gone downhill, or if I remember the food as being better than it really was, but we went with another couple and we all were disappointed. The food was truly uninspired. The sauces were bland and thin, the enchilada, burrito, and taco fillings just drive-through restaurant ordinary, there were frozen mixed vegetables in the rice (!), even the obligatory chips and salsa were not very good (the salsa think and watery, the chips greasy). Even the more ""special"" entrees, a cheese-stuffed chile poblano and a meat-filled chile relleno , were blah. What has happened? Well, whatever it was, we won't be returning. I can do better at home with a can of tomatillos, some chicken, a bunch of cilantro, and a package of commercially-made tortillas! Pros: menu prices Cons: just about everything else more

If you want to get REAL Mexican... 8/28/2006

Awesome food. I've been to all of the El Campesino locations but the Monroeville location takes the cake. Everything on the menu is fantastic. Enchilada and burrito sauces, salsa, and refried beans are some of the best I've ever had. Super fast service. If you're worried about authentic, some of the employees barely speak English! All the employees ARE authentic. The only down side is this location is BYOB, if that's something you're worried about. Pros: Lots of food for the $ Cons: BYOB more

AVOID @ all costs... 8/20/2006

Mexican food? Not even close. Let us start with the beginning~ when you are eating GOOD Mexican food NO one cares how the place looks... Ever been to a taco stand on the corner? But this might as well been McDonald's. Pros: Can't find a one. The ice tea was okay. Cons: Too many to mention, seriously go get a ten pack of tacos from Taco Bell, much better! more

fresh chips, salsa needs some cilantro, chili renallo is unbeatable 8/19/2006

I used to love this restaurant but lately, it's slipping. The service isn't so friendly as it used to be (it depends on who you get) the food quality has become very inconsistent, and the prices are climbing as the quality goes down. I wouldn't mind paying more, really I wouldn't, because when it's good it's great! I'm practically a weekly regular but am beginning to re-think regular lunches there. Lately, it's been very disappointing. And you think they would be friendlier to customers they see over and over again. I once complained that our food took forever to arrive, was cold when we got it, and the server was rude. I got ""sorry to hear that"" and then was rung up and charged the full amount for our dinners. And still I came back for more, thinking they were busy and any restaurant can have a bad day but it's been inconsistent the last few months. C'mon guys! Don't go down the tubes now! And hey, it pays to give a little extra attention to your regulars, we are the ones who reccomend your place to other potential regulars! And if a customer had a legitimate complaint, don't you think you should give a discount on the meal or offer a free one next time we come in? A sincere apology with a bit of a price break for bad service or bad food goes a loooong way in chalking up a bad experience in a place you once loved. I sincerely hope things improve in the near future to the top notch food and service we USED to get there. Pros: Parking always available, prices very reasonable, food usually fresh Cons: Servers tend to get rather unfriendly when rushed, when the place gets busy your server should smile even more, not stop smiling altogether. more

It ain't Maya or Rosa Mexicana, but what is in Pittsburgh? 8/10/2006

Try Here First! Better than California 7/10/2006

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, than relocated to LA... Strange thing was I was expecting to find all this great Mexican food on the west coast, when In actuality I found myself missing El Campisinos It's true Folks... The closer you get to Mexico, it doesn't get any better!!! I found out that so many places are about the ""Hustle"" and not about the quality. In Pittsburgh, this is as close as your going to get to authentic without travelling across the border yourself. Mind you all Mexican food in America is Americanized ~ But here you will get the most original elements available. Particular things I would like to note are the combination fajitas (Bien Cosidas) which means ""cooked well done""~ it's big enough for two people, and the Tamatio Salsa ~great on steak/meat (ask for it). They also cook the tortilla chips at the beginning of everyday unlike other places that get them precooked in bags. Eat up, and take my word for it ~ don't take it for granted, great mexican food is hard to find... even in California! Pros: Taste Par None Cons: Blink and You might Miss the Location more

The Best Damn Mexican Food EVER! 6/15/2006

I have been eating here for years. I was a little reserved the first time, but after that, I was hooked. The food is homemade and nothing beats it. The service is friendly and quick. I get the chicken burritos and a side of rice. I've tried other things, but that is my favorite and it's delicious every time. I've eaten at Mad Mex and Cozumel and they do not come close to El Campesino. Great food, great service, great price! What more could you ask for! Pros: service, parking, prices more

Not to swift 5/18/2006

I had ordered the Special to try several things. The little round thing was very good, but that was the only food that was. The hamburg was DRY with NO taste. I thought you could get chicken. For 11.95 for the meal I expected to possibly like it. The rice was also very DRY there. The chips and salsa were excennent as well as my Fried Ice Cream. I will go back there Just for the fried Ice Cream. Odoba up the road had a much better Burrito for my husband and was less expensive too. Pros: good parking, friendly, NON smoking area Cons: Language barrier more

El Campesino 5/22/2004

The food and the staff are great here. It has been a while since I have been to Mexico - but I never forgot what the tastes like! I have not had a Margarita yet (yes they are serving!) but I hear they are fantastic. Chi Chi's was fresh from the freezer to the fryers and microwaves. Don Pablos has great fajatias. Mad Mex is all about California. El Campesino es muy bueno! Pros: Inexpensize, Flavorful, Comfortable more

Great food! 5/16/2004

I'm from LA where great mexican food lurks behind every corner. Can't really say that about Pittsburgh. But among the places I've tried here, this comes the closest. The food is as authentic as it gets in the Burgh. It's very reasonably priced. I go there everytime I get an itch for great Mexican. Also great for large groups and kids. The only drawback is that they need a liquor licence to start dishing out the margaritas. But at least you can bring your own which I recommend. Pros: Great food, Inexpensive, Always parking more

The dining room is simple, with little decoration. People don't come here for ambience, but rather for good Mexican food in large quantities at low prices.
