New Owner, New Menu. Best Food By The Beach 11/4/2008

The Girlfriend and I decided to give this place a second chance, since our last desaster a few months back. when we arrived we were suprised to fid that the name had been changed to Big John's. Their menu had also changed, it still had most of the pasta dishes and pizza but it also had alot of new items. The little woman had an awsome Ravioli dish and I had the best Burger I have ever eten. The staff has also become quite a bit more customer friendly since our last visit. About half way through our dinner the new owner came by our table and introduced himself and wanted to make sure our food was up to par which I thought was very cool. He also invited us to join them for Breakfast, and showed us his new Breakfast Menu. Very Awsome since this area is lacking a good Breakfast Joint. Pros: Excelent Food, Good Prices, Friendly Staff, All You Can Eat Specials more

new owner new name excellant food 11/1/2008

My family used to frequent this establishemnt until march of this year when we just were not happy with the food. I received a flyer at home just this last week saying that the menu and staff had changed, along with the name. So we thought we would give it a tery once again. WOW what a change, still looks the same inside, much brighter and cleaner ourside also. The new name is BIG JOHNS CAFE. I had heard of this guy when he was in El Segundo but never had a chance to eat there. Big John has added lunch and breakfast to the menu. My wife and I went in three days ago and they were still serving from the old menu. Even, that had improved with the new management. They have improved the bread and added a relish tray which is delivered as soon as you sit down. what a throw back to when I was a kid. Pros: excellant food and service Cons: hard to find the parking lot more

Bread tasted like tapwater:( 4/22/2008

I used to frequent Cucina Calabrese, but not so much anymore. Something happened and not for the good. They served us small portions and the bread tasted like bad tap water (their bread used to be very good). The employees were snooty (nothing to be snooty about). This food isn't cheap either, so there isn't a reason to serve small portions (which they didn't do before) or food that is of poor quality. The jig is up Cucina Calabrese...you just lost some more customers. Pros: Nope Cons: Poor quality, small portions, snooty staff more

Classic Italian cuisine with a warm atmosphere 3/29/2007

It took a while for my Girlfriend and I to try this place as it's location and exterior look unappealing. But we were surprised by the warm service and vibrant dishes they serve. With the more popular and longstanding Brogino's down the street this restaurant doesn't see the heavy crowds or crying babies that permeate dinner time. I will also say that the menu is a grade above what Brogino's serve and there is more room and a relaxed atmosphere here. Pros: Dishes, Atmosphere, Smiling staff Cons: Location, Lacks customers more

Our favorite neighborhood Italian joint! 11/30/2006

Great bread, savory eggplant parmigiana, delicious baked ziti, fair pricing and personable service! Some tasty hot bread, a little chianti and some wonderful Italian food...Cucina's is a great (cozy) place for date night!! Can't wait for our next date night there! Pros: It's a South Bay delight! more

Best Italian Food in Southern California 10/29/2006

YOU MUST EAT HERE!!! If you really want great food, huge portions and reasonable prices...this is the place. I have eaten Italian food everywhere in LA and I truly believed that this is the best place to eat. I go by the guide that if the marinara sauce, meatballs and bread are fresh and taste good (which I have high standards), then this is the place for me! And my god does this place have great everything. It is actually owned and run by a family, the Adimari's...REAL ITALIANS!!!! The service is quick the food fresh and a good selection of wine. The average meal price is around $15, but the portions are big. The Tirimisu is home made and one of the best in LA. I also have them cater my business lunches and they are always on time and the food is hot!! GO THERE TONIGHT!!!! more

really good bread 9/3/2006

Very nice italian restaurant. The bread is really excellent! Many different dishes to choose from, and the portions are big. The waitstaff was especially friendly and attentive. My only complaint is that the marinara sauce was a little too salty, but that might not always be the case. This was my first time going, and I would definitely go to this restaurant again. more

Great Authentic Italian Food! 4/15/2005

This delicious, family owned restaurant is grossly underrated! It has awesome Italian bread, scrumptious gnocchi, excellent ravioli, and the list goes on and on. They even have a frequent dining card! This place is truly one of the best Italian restaurants in the LA area. Bon Appetito! Pros: Delicious, Variety, Great value Cons: Mediocre ambience more

A fine experience 1/19/2005

This is an example of a good restaurant with good food and impecable service. We found that like most other restaurants of it's kind here in southern california, it is overpriced, but not by it's comparison to it's counterparts, merely by the actual value of what is on the plate. In comparison to other places of it's kind, the food is fine. The greatest quality of this establishment is the lack of latin help in the forefront. We find that it greatly distracts from the experience of dining on ethnic cuisine to encounter mixed ethnicities...this is not an issue here. more

Authentic Italian Dining! 8/3/2003

I just wanted to say that I discovered this new italian treasure in the middle of redondo beach. Cucina Calabrese is a new restaurant that I thought I'd give a try and I'm delighted I did. I was told it was owned and operated by an italian family(not usual today). The ambience was very comfortable, family oriented, but still romantic for me and my husband, with their soft lighting and candlelight. The staff was very friendly, all our needs were met. The food was mouth-watering. They served a large selection from pasta to seafood, pizza to veal, wine and beer. This place now has another loyal customer! Pros: Large Rear parking, excellent food/prices, friendly staff more
