Our family has been to Chez Jean often. We have taken as few as 2 and as many as 30 to the restraunt. We always make reservations however occassionally it may only give them an hour notice. They are always polite, easy to work with, and the food is always fabulous. We have done a rehersal dinner - received complements from every guest. We have celebrated birthdays, and been served the best cakes, cookies, breads you have ever eaten. We have done small romantic meals, this is just the right atmosphere. Occassionally we get hungry and want to be pampered. This is the only place we thought of. If you want a fabulous meal, great atmosphere and service unsurpassed anywhere , this is the place to go. Pros: Best food in the world. Think I have died and went to heaven more

One of the greatest dining experiences in the metropolitan Indianapolis area. 1/27/2008

This has been our favorite "special occasion" restaurant for 20 years (with the exception of the little over a year they were closed). The food is always excellent and served in courses, with no rush to get you out. I particularly like the escargot appetizer which has never been a disappointment. Take your special significant other to Chez Jean for that special occasion and the dining experience and atmosphere will be something you will long remember as a positive, and you will want to return. Pros: Great ambience and food Cons: None more

Honestly, when my partner and I pulled up to this place, we were scared. Two gay men in the middle of nowhere on my birthday. We laughed so hard. I asked him if he had his cell phone on then laughed again. The place is pretty creepy on the outside in the winter. There isn't much lighting. Once we walked in, we snickered again. We talked about how badly they needed to update the decor. We had been told what to expect but we didn't think it would be what it was. When hostess came out to greet us, she was very professional and nice. The service here is impeccable! They brought us the food that we ordered. OMG!!! IT WAS AWESOME!!!!! We went back a month later for Valentine's...OMG!!! People, you HAVE to go here, this place is so wonderful. All in all, everything added up and came together. It is seriously like being in the French countryside and being served in a small village. We absolutely LOVE it and take our friends on a regular basis!!!! Chef Huckaby is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!! I stepped outside to smoke and happened to "gander" over by the kitchen window. The place was immaculate and there were like 15 people working in the kitchen. There were probably only 6 people in the entire restaurant. When you're there, you and yours MUST try the Souffles. The chocolate ones are SO GOOD!!! You have to order in two (same flavor) so worth the money and SO much fun to go here. Mostly older (well-dressed) couples or groups here. Not pretentious AT ALL!!! What a GREAT experience. Please try it!!! Pros: The food is absolutely to die for!!! Cons: It is sort of far from my house :) more

Valentine's Day celebration 2/7/2006

We made our reservations to celebrate Valentines Day. We arrived at 2:20 p.m. My husband rang the bell, as instructed, to register for our room. We waited 30 minutes. While waiting we called, no one answered. We left our number and a brief message indicating that we were there and leaving. We did receive a call at 4:00, stating she wasnt there due to an ill employee. We are not unsympathetic people, but Chez Jean had our phone number and could have and should have called. We would have understood and waited until later in the day. The feeble apology was disappointing as was the lack of consideration for our inconvenience, time and disappointment. How does Chez Jean manage to get people coming to their restaurant? If the illness of one employee can make such a dent in the operation, a review of the procedures might help. Cons: poor communication, customer relations more

I have been going here for years as our special event restaurant. I think it is romantic but also it is a place where we have taken our children and they loved it!! In all the years we have been going, I have to rate this tops and in fact, it is our favorite restaurant in Indy. Have had a very few less than perfect experiences but overall I still love the place. Pros: excellent food, friendly, variety Cons: distance from Indy, not fancy outside more

I love French food, and having lived in France, I like to think I have a taste for good French food and wine. I am not a snob, and am eager to be pleased when I encounter good food. For my finance's birthday, I suggested Chez Jean, and boy, am I sorry. Upon entering, the place literally smelled of cat litter....and it permeated the whole place. My escargot were stone cold, jelly-like and poorly flavored. The onion soup was flat and flavorless, the tenderloin of beef so overly sauced and thickly seasoned that it could have been a roofing shingle. The only non-disappointment was the chocolate souffle, but we took that to-go because of the offensive, stifling odor and stuffiness of the interior dining room. What a grotesque disappointment...go to Applebee's and save your money. If this is Mr. Huckabee's homage to French cuisine, he needs to take up needlepoint. more
