Cheli's Chili

Great for a snack, but not a destination spot, by any means. I can't tell you the number of times I've sat at a table with an empty soda glass sitting on the edge of the table, just waiting for a refill, while the servers stand around in the wait station, twisting their hair with their fingers and giggling at the latest perceived dramas in their lives. And if the servers do make it over to your table, don't expect a lot more personality than you would get from the clown's head at a Jack in the Box drive-thru. My wife and I were attending a cousin's 30th birthday party. One of the places that she wanted to stop at was Chelis, to see what it was like. We followed the directions we were given and found thier parking lot. When my wife pulled up to the valet they started screaming at her like she was a dog. I couldn't understand what was wrong, but it really dosn't matter if she pulled in the wrong side (I only saw one entrance), they were full, or they just don't like Fords, it was not only unproffesional but down right insulting. Unfortunatly my wife pulled out of there and left before I could get out of the car, and by the time I got back there the valet was nowhere to be found. We had to park a few blocks away and pay the city of Dearborn thier parking tax, since every free spot in the city seems to have a parking meter now. The bar itself was ok, nothing special. A dozen places come to mind every bit as good, and many better, with the one exception being that thier employees are respectful and they actually want your buisness. The attitude I felt from the employees once I got inside was more like they expected you to be there reguardless of the service or the actual merits of the place, as if the name of the owner was all it should take to force you to spend your money... almost arrogant. I can not give a review about the actual inside service, as the valet's unprofessional behavior was enough for us to say happy birthday and excuse ourselves from the party, but if you feel that a buisness's employees represent the company and are a reflection of the managment then, unless you like to give your money to ungratful insulting and rude people find one of the many other bars in the area who appreciate your service. Went with a group took 25min to get drinks, had to beg to get silverware, couldn't believe they charged extra for wings to be hot! nachos were horrible 1/2 cup of cheese on a pound of broken chips. Couldn't get a itemized bill and when we complained the wait staff stood at the bar talking about us and giving dirty looks. never had such a bad experience!!! more

My husband and I had went out for dinner at your restaurnt We had ordered the wings, and when we finally got them (about 25 minutes after ordering and the place wasn't even croweded!) they were very scrawny looking, and way over cooked. When we tried a few, and wanted to have them taken off our bill, the waitress came back and said the manager said no, he wasn't going to do that, and he would replace what we didn't eat. He wouldn't even come over to the table to explain why, and kept going through the waitress. They gave us the replaced wings to go, and when we got home opened the box to find a long piece of human hair fried into one of the wings. So we went back up there to show the manager, and his explaination was that it was from the chicken! Whatever! Horrilbe management there! Do not know how to treat their customers, or resolve customer conflicts. You need to look into how your management is running your business, because they are horrible at what they do, and we would not go back there again. There are plenty of restaurants down Michigan Ave. that would love to have our business. If you keep managing your restaurant like it is being run now, you won't have to worry about staying open. So I decided to stop in the new Cheils Chili Bar of Clinton Twp. and it was awesome. The jerseys on the walls, the scoreboard in the middle of the bar, pool, air hockey, a hunting game, and you can even work on your jumpshot with the basketball game. The new Chelis on 18 & Hayes is the new place to be. From the awesome pizza sticks appetizer to the famous chili, i was greatly pleased. Our waiter was kind and treated my family like we were his own, the manager made my child laugh, and the building itself had a very nice clean safe enviroment. I went back during a Red Wings game and the place was packed, that was the only let down. It took 20 minutes to get a seat but the wait was worth it. I recommend you go here during a game. I should have checked here before dining here. I had high expectations upon arriving. I figured with the Chelios I couldn't go wrong. First I was a bit dissapointed there wasn't a drink menu. No big deal, I can handle that. Had to try the ""famous"" chili. I went all out and added sour cream, jalepeno and onion for an extra buck, mind you a bowl allready cost $5.00. I got my chili luke warm. Would have been happier with a can of Stagg chili at the grocery store. Ok...no biggie right? I asked the manager for fresher, hotter chili..sweet..they are taking care of me right? wrong! Got the same luke warm bowl chili. At this point of im kinda irked and ready to drop the gloves. Talked to another manager, he just blew me off. Told the waitress, she just said sorry and avoided the problem by leaving the table as fast as she could. We have been there twice, first time food took so long to get to us we had to take it home :( not to mention it was no good at all once we got to eat it no apologies for the long wait.. Second time hoping first impressions were wrong, food was there timely, but all of it was COLD, not warm COLD, I ordered a Ruben the corned beef was so dry it crumbled and could barely swallow it my 4 year old who will eat anything complained that her 6.95 Kraft Mac & Cheese was ice cold, so I called for a manager which I never do!! and complained he was such a rude person never said I am sorry I sent back my food and stated I did not want anything else instead of taking my food off the bill that I did not even eat they charged me for it!! more

I commute between Buffalo and Chicago, and every once in awhile I have business in Michigan. I decided to try Cheli's. All the food was cold, and we waited forever. One of the people in my group got sick that night from the food she ate. When I called the restaurant, the manager was very rude. She would not take any responsibility, although it was obviously because of the food. I will never eat there again and suggest, if you want to stay healthy, you stay away. Chris Chelios should be embarrassed that his name is connected with bad food and rude managers. more

I love this place, it's the best bar around. They always have a great crowd and the friendliest waitresses and bartenders. I'd recommend it to anyone to go watch a game there or grab a drink or some food. Try the nachos.. they are awesome! Pros: Drinks, food, deck, service more

Flew to Detroit to pick up new Ford truck and see some Ford related sights. Wanted lunch and chose Chelis in Dearborn. Valet parking is mandatory or be towed! Had a lunch of chili over spaghetti noodles with satisfactory service. The valets were parking cars four to every three marked spots. Noticed my passenger door on my new red truck had a ding with black paint and it was parked next to a black car. The valet could not say anything but call his boss. I went in to see the manager of Chelis and found her to be totally inept and unapologetic! It seems that area restaurants with parking lots the size of a McDonalds or even smaller have a scam system of forced valet parking!! WALK to this restaurant if you must go and don't ask for help with problems, you will be frustrated at best!!! Pros: Atmosphere Cons: PARKING! Management ineptness!! more

If you're looking for less than marginal food and service that is well below the norm, then you'll probably like this place. Cheli's is best suited for the guy that likes to drink more beer than he should and then hang around the bar spouting obsenities that can be heard well above the very high noise level there. more

When I went, the staff was right on the money...food was hot, and it didn't take excessively long. However...can't rave about the chili I had, frankly it's on a par with Wendy's (I make better at home). A half hour promised wait lasted 1 1/2 hours. Hamburgers, Nachos, Fish Sandwiches Soup and Chili were ordered. Food took over 1/2 hour to arrive and food was cold. Nachos had unmelted cheese. Hamburgers were dried out. Fish sandwich were ice cold with unmelted american cheese. Soup was cold. Chili didn't arrive until after the meal when we were waiting for the check. Waitress refused to remove it from the bill only offering to ""bag it up "" to take home. Absolutely terrible experience! Cons: Service, Food, Wait more
