Cafe Hidalgo

My wife and I like to try new places, so we made reservations for the wine tasting they have every Wednesday. We had no problems with the wine, however we had problems with the service to get food. After a half hour of tasting I went into Cafe Hidalgo to ask how the food service works, since the tasting is held in the patio area, the waiters and waitresses were clueless as to the special menu that we were suppose to order from. They told me someone would be walking around getting orders. Another 45 minutes passed and I had to order food from Stadium Tavern, across the hall. The service and food there was excellent! Cafe Hidalgo really dropped the ball here because we would of bought food and bought bottles of wines we had tasted. However, after not getting served for over and hour I will not go back. A friend brought me to Cafe Hidalgo, and I was pleasantly surprise. The restaurant is situated in downtown Fullerton among other restaurants that are all not quite noticeable, but its flavors definitely are more than noticeable. I had the daily special, Grilled Salmon with Caviar Sauce. The fish was appropriately grilled, and the caviar, which is really Japanese fish eggs, is nicely made into a delicious sauce. Other people in the party had the steaks and seafood pasta, all of the items are complimented. Dessert wise, the chocolate creme brulee mentioned in a previous review is worth a try, but the flan is really not so good, so stick with the creme brulee. Located in the heart of downtown Fullerton in the same buildings as classic restaurants as the CELLAR and Brownstone, Cafe Hidalgo has fresh food, warm flour tortillas instead of bread and good service. Our food was good and low in salt unlike other similar restaurants and tasted different from other tapas/Spanish food we've had before. Our waiter was excellent and the chocolate creme brulee is a must. Reservations aren't always necessary and parking is on the street but there is also valet. Pros: Food, Service, Ambience more

Before dinning here, I could not find much info over the net about this restaurant, so I thought I would help out anybody looking for an opinion. I really enjoyed this place and its food. It is set in an old historic Spanish building in Downtown Fullerton, a very cute area. They offer outside dinning which is in the middle of a courtyard area, quant and quite. The food had a Mexican/Spanish flare, and for ""Tapa's"" the portions were generous. We ordered the Calamari for an appatizer, and it was one of the best I have had. Was not coated in a heavy fry, but tender strips cooked perfectly. Their dinner portions good, and tasty. Had the steak in a Chimichurri sauce, YUM, a huge cute of meat. Their prices about $8 for apps, and $15-25 for dinner. Nice stiff cocktails too! more
